Office Gripe #3

Three little words I live by the moment I walk into my office every day:

"Do Your Job"

It gained steam with me when I saw it on the "America's Game" presentation about the Patriots, showing coach Bill Belichick repeating the line multiple times. It was so profound that when Josh McDaniels was hired to coach the Denver Broncos that he had it painted on the wall at the training facility in Centennial, Colorado.

It fits, maybe even moreso, here in corporate America. I have barely been here 2 months only to find the same tired and bothersome behavior here in the cubefarm as it was 2 years ago. You would think with the economy barely recovering and gas prices at a ridiculous level that maybe folks would be on their toes to prove their worth. At least I did. And I'm dead wrong.
I get to work with people who are thrilled to pass the buck, not willing to even the minimal of their own requirements, and I get to answer questions that I have no clue about. Awesome. All this means is that it is the same as it ever was.

Well, here's the fun-I'm not. I am still the same person who believes in doing the right thing and if I help you then you can help me, and vice versa. The Golden Rule and that whole thing. This is business, not personal, and yet I get to be attacked in personal ways. Even when I'm brand spankin' new. Ain't that sweet? No problem, I know how to play it. 35 years, a bit of time off in the last 5 years sure has given me a different perspective. While I'm happy to be earning a paycheck, that doesn't mean I have to swallow shit to get it. Feels damn good to stand on my own 2 feet and my principles and just retort with sound business reasoning.

Sucks for them, don't it?
