Week 5 Picks!
Denver @ Baltimore (-7): I must be missing something. Denver just went on the road and only ran for 11 yards and still beat Tennessee. Baltimore hasn’t blown anyone out yet and has topped out at 24 points thru 4 games. I realize that Baltimore has been a house of horrors for Denver in the recent years, but come on. Still, after my record last week (I’ll get to that in a bit), I’m thinking Baltimore wants to start establishing the running game early and often. Baltimore.
Jacksonville @ Buffalo (-1 ½): This is only a game for people that love fantasy football. I don’t know any Bills fans and I certainly don’t know a whole lot of folks that select Jacksonville as a vacation destination. I think Jags QB David Garrard suck it up and starts throwing INTs all over the place like Halloween candy, and Buffalo embraces the trade of RB Marshawn Lynch by going back to RB Fred Jackson. Buffalo.
Kansas City @ Indianapolis (-7): Others think that Kansas City’s 3-0 record is a mirage. Indy will be at home pissed after losing on a last second 59 yard field goal at Jacksonville. I don’t think KC is a mirage as a team, and think they can run the ball quite well, especially with both Colts starting safeties out of this game. The Colts win, but it won’t be the blowout most think it will be. Kansas City.
St. Louis @ Detroit (-3): I know some may have looked at the schedule and wondered why this game was even made. I’m not one of them. I’d watch this game if it were on TV in my area, I had the Ticket, or had any money to go to a bar. I think this will be an entertaining game and I think the over/under on it is way too low. I see the #1 pick Sam Bradford making some great throws and him getting sacked by #2 pick Ndamukong Suh at least once. I see Detroit making more plays because they have more overall talent. Detroit.
Atlanta (-3) @ Cleveland: Cleveland has been in every game, pretty much. They play tougher at home. And with all these losing seasons since they came back in 1999, now someone has the brilliant idea to charge people $5 to walk thru a parking lot that tailgates. Oh come on! Haven’t the people of Cleveland suffered enough already? Now charging them to walk? Atlanta, on the other side, has apparently ‘lucked into’ their last 2 wins. I’m not buying it. They didn’t make a kicker miss a 29 yard FG for New Orleans, nor did they make 49ers CB try and score with less than 2 minutes after he picked off a Matt Ryan pass, only to be tackled and forced to fumble by Falcons WR Roddy White (find the play, show it to kids, I don’t care what sport it is-never quit hustling!) and then win the game on a last second FG. Too bad. I’m not buying the lucky part. That is how that team down in the ATL is built. They win. It ain’t pretty, and it doesn’t have to be, a ‘W’ is a ‘W’. Atlanta.
Tampa Bay @ Cincinnati (-6 ½): I have no faith in Cincinnati. They are a Jeckyll & Hyde team. Talent-wise they should have blown out the Browns last week. Instead, they get behind and have to have QB Carson Palmer chuck it all over the field. Tampa Bay comes off their bye week. It’s a young team, but not a great team just yet. They have talent at certain positions, but they lack overall. Cincinnati.
Chicago @ Carolina (-1 ½): Now here is a line I don’t comprehend. I know, I know-Chicago will be without QB Jay Cutler after he did his best impersonation of a piƱata in the 1st half last week vs the Giants. But Carolina sucks. WR Steve Smith (The Original Steve Smith, for those keeping track at home) is out this week with the dreaded high ankle sprain, so the Panthers will be starting a rookie QB and 2 rookie WRs. Let’s add in that former Panthers DE Julius Peppers is returning to where it all started, and I have no idea why this line is not only so low, but why Carolina is favored. Chicago.
Green Bay (-2 ½) @ Washington: So Donovan McNabb went back to Philly and won. Did anyone notice how not so great he played? I love the guy, but to say his performance was ‘uneven’ would be putting it mildly. Green Bay didn’t play so hot at home against Detroit, either. I think I have an inkling as to why-they have no running game to speak of! Pack GM Ted Thompson is going to rue the day he didn’t trade the 4th round pick to Buffalo for RB Marshawn Lynch. You have to have a little balance in the league if you want to contend for a title. Washington doesn’t really throw it deep that well due to a lack of weapons, and I think GB comes out firing. Green Bay.
NY Giants @ Houston (-3): Which Giants team shows up? The one that got rolled at home vs. Tennessee, or the one who decided to go all gangbusters with a 4-man line last Sunday night against Da Bears? Houston is in a little trouble without suspended LT Duane Brown. They can run the ball, but passing it might not be that great of an idea. And while the Texans can stop the run, they cannot stop anyone from throwing it. Eli Manning has a big day. NY Giants.
New Orleans (-7) @ Arizona: New Orleans offense needs to get going. And they’ve been blessed by the schedule makers with the Cardinals. Arizona is a fraud team that is much, much worse than their record (2-2) indicates. And they will be starting rookie QB Max Hall this week. If you have the Saints D/ST on your fantasy squad, this might be the week to start ‘em. New Orleans needs to get their real playmakers involved this week. And it says here QB Drew Brees does exactly that. New Orleans.
San Diego (-6) @ Oakland: This game is always one of those that people look at and think they know exactly what will happen. And then the game starts and there’s a ton of ‘What the hell just happened?’ moments. The Chargers will start showing off their 2 man RBBC (running back by committee, which we all hate), and Oakland will run it as well with RB Michael Bush. First team to 21 wins! San Diego will win, but it will be late, and not by much. San Diego.
Tennessee @ Dallas (-7): Tennessee QB Vince Young comes back to Texas. Yes, it will mean something to him. On top of that, I’m sure all of the Titans are sitting in their meeting rooms wondering how the heck they lost to Denver-at home! Dallas comes off the bye week after they finally won a game and looked like a real team. Moronic GM/Owner Jerry Jones came out on Tuesday and said that ‘everyone is in agreement’ that RB Felix Jones needs to get the ball more. Jerry needs to stay away, much like George Steinbrenner when he was suspended by Major League Baseball and GM ‘Stick’ Michael drafted all the guys that you see now as the foundation of that team. Jerry, go away and let the football people do the football stuff. You almost gave Bill Parcells the keys and look who he drafted and molded (that would be most of your defense and some of your offensive line and oh that Romo guy). Dallas will throw it, and Tennessee better try to throw it, just to open up some lanes for RB Chris Johnson. This game will be close until the 4th quarter. Dallas.
Philadelphia @ San Francisco (-3): I bet the execs at NBC were super excited when they saw this game 2 weeks ago. Since then, the Eagles have gone back to QB Kevin Kolb (Michael Vick is hurt) and San Fran is now 0-4, with one fantastic performance vs. New Orleans. Philly can be run on, and that should play right into the hands of what the 49ers want to do. Kolb will check down too much, raising the ire of Eagles fans, again. San Francisco.
Minnesota @ NY Jets (-3 ½): Lots to get to here. Brett Favre returns from his one ‘uneven’ year for the Jets. Randy Moss is a Viking again (don’t get me started). The Jets will have the return of WR Santonio ‘iPod’ Holmes and LB Calvin Pace, along with Big Mouf CB Darrelle Revis. Last time we saw Revis Island he was pulling his hammy trying to cover Moss in week 2 against New England. I’m thinking this game is all about Jets QB Mark Sanchez throwing to his WRs and Favre forcing throws to Moss. Jets, and I’ll never get to quit hearing Rotund Rex Ryan yapping for another week, unless I can find the mute button.
Last week: 6-8 Season: 28-34
Fantasy Picks for Week 5
Denver @ Baltimore: Todd Heap (TE), Baltimore-Denver doesn’t cover the TE so well. That and they will be paying attention to the Ravens running game and WR Anquan Boldin.
Jacksonville @ Buffalo: Fred Jackson (RB), Buffalo-Jackson has been told that now that Marshawn Lynch has been dealt to Seattle that he will see the majority of carries. Jacksonville just ain’t that good.
Kansas City @ Indianapolis: Thomas Jones (RB), Kansas City-Indianapolis is light up front on defense. Kansas City will run the ball, as that is what they want their identity to be. Jones is their ‘pluggin’ runner and will get 20 carries.
St. Louis @ Detroit: Javhid Best (RB), Detroit-Best is averaging 7 yards/carry on turf, and like 3.3 on grass. Game is at home on turf, and while the Rams are improving, let’s not go crazy here.
Atlanta @ Cleveland: Michael Turner (RB), Atlanta-I get it, he’s a top 10 player in fantasy football, or at least he was drafted as such. The last few weeks have been ‘meh’. I think the Falcons try to get him going on the road to ease the pressure on QB Matt Ryan.
Tampa Bay @ Cincinnati: Chad OchoCinco (WR), Cincinnati-Let’s call this the ‘Squeaky Wheel’ Theory. Terrell Owens got all the targets and stats last week, I can see Chad pouting in the film room this week. QB Carson Palmer rewards him.
Chicago @ Carolina: Greg Olsen (TE), Chicago-No Jay Cutler, no problem. Olsen hasn’t seen many looks, but since Carolina is horrid, he gets some love this Sunday. A TE is a backup QB’s best friend.
Green Bay @ Washington: Jordy Nelson (WR), Green Bay-I have nothing but my gut telling me that a #3/4 WR for the Pack will do something. Washington will lose him on 1 play, but it’ll be a big one.
NY Giants @ Houston: Hakeem Nicks (WR), NY Giants-Houston can’t cover the pass and Nicks is the long ball and scoring threat at WR for the G-Men. ‘Nuff said.
New Orleans @ Arizona: Marques Colston (WR), New Orleans-The Saints need to get their passing game going, and Colston has been very quiet all year. This is his week to break out.
San Diego @ Oakland: Michael Bush (RB), Oakland-With no Darren McFadden, early draft sensation Bush gets ‘his’ job back. Oakland can run, and they always do alright against the Chargers, at least at home they do.
Tennessee @ Dallas: Kenny Britt (WR), Tennessee-Britt has been given another opportunity due to injury along the WR core for the Titans. Vince Young will have to throw the ball for the Titans to have a chance and to loosen up Dallas’ D from swarming on RB Chris Johnson.
Philadelphia @ San Francisco: Josh Morgan (WR), San Francisco-Philly will roll their coverage to stop TE Vernon Davis and they’ll still have the dumb idea that Michael Crabtree is special (he isn’t), making Morgan the guy to have single coverage. Who knows, maybe QB Alex Smith can find him.
Minnesota @ NY Jets: Santonio Holmes (WR), NY Jets-This will be Holmes’ first game since his 4 game suspension. Minnesota can’t cover WR’s going deep. And if they do, they will be occupied with Braylon ‘0.16’ Edwards and TE Dustin Keller. Holmes, welcome to NY and Monday night.
