I'll take care of the 2 disturbing things I've seen/read in the last two days right off the bat...
Disturbing item #1-uh, has anyone else read some of this stuff on Ben Roethlisberger? I could sit here and go on and on about how money corrupts the justice system and blahblahblah it to death, but that's not what is disturbing to me. It's his behavior. I'm not talking about it under the guise of a professional athlete or a 'two-time Super Bowl winning QB', I'm not. I'm appalled at his behavior as a guy. I read some of this stuff and wondered where this guy's parents are. Doesn't anyone teach decorum anymore? Or more importantly, do you really need to be taught that it's not okay to lock a girl in a bathroom stall and force yourself on her? Or that No means No? And in all honesty, if there is one civil lawsuit pending, a separate charge dropped, and a potential 3rd sexual assault case out there, to me that points to a blowout investigation all the way back to when Big Ben was in college. It's coming, and it ain't gonna be pretty. This guy needs help, no joking, because his head is not screwed on straight when it comes to dealing with members of the opposite sex, and it could cost him his livelihood. As much as I don't like the Steelers or the city of Shittsburgh, I don't want anyone to lose their job.
Disturbing item #2-Speaking of lack of decorum, tact, manners, etc.-when the hell did it become okay to belch and fart at a table in a dining establishment? Or to talk about those things in front of someone you don't know? So this trivia game business that I'm helping with, the owner's wife and stepdaughter show up late to the event. I was on a team with my friend/manager's 10 yr old daughter (we are-Team Bacon). These two 'women' (and I use that term loosely-should insert 'broads' here) proceed to just be rude. Oh, and did I mention I was eating? The owner's wife is in her late 40's, the stepdaughter 26ish. From the outside appearance, two attractive females (wait for it....). But I guess at my age/maturity level-alright fine, age-I don't find things attractive at all. I know what I like and will put up with. These two are as empty as empty gets. No crumbs in the Pringles can that is their collective heads. Stepdaughter kept belching, like no one would notice. I did, I'm 34, not deaf. Then Mom leans over and I hear her say she 'just tooted'. WTF???! The 10 yr old girl looked me and said 'is this okay?'...my response was 'no'. I was asked if we should always respect our elders. That answer was given to me by my Pops when I was 12-'if you can call BS on someone, do it, and if you don't like someone or their behavior, speak up'. I relayed that bit of info to a 10 year old, who nodded in agreement....this is one smart kid. Finally, after yet another belch, I shot a look, which got a sheepish 'oh, excuse me'. My look of disgust probably said it all, but I looked at her and said, "Stay Classy". I will end this little rant by stating that if this broad (bingo!) ever questions out loud why she is single, I will have an answer for her. What repulsive behavior. And since her Mom was next to her right in line with the same thinking, the old adage of the apple not falling far from the tree is certainly in line.
As for the trivia-a 10 year old and I tied for 1st with a bunch of engineers, and since we are both tied to the company that runs the game, we couldn't win, but I thought it was pretty neat that me and a 10 year old could hang with the nerdery. If it weren't for that question about Star Trek I think we would've won outright....
NBA Playoff Time
It's no longer a great passion of mine, but there are some reasons to watch. Here are my predictions on the first round (if you bet with any of my knowledge best of luck...)
Eastern Conference
Chicago vs. Cleveland
You're kidding, right? LeBron James just came out and said Chicago hasn't seen this playoff monster yet. Uh Oh. I think we are about to see King James go all MJ '91 on us. Hello, domination, good bye Bulls. I still Chicago has enough fight to potentially snag a game, and I fully expect a chippy series, especially with Joakim Noah and Anderson Varejao battling it out for 'best hair'. Cleveland in 5.
Milwaukee vs. Atlanta
It sucks that Milwaukee starting C Andrew Bogut shattered his arm a couple of weeks ago (I'd hunt down the YouTube clip, but I don't promote anyone's injury/gag reflex) because that would have made this a real sneaky series to watch. That being said, here's on funny reason to watch, Milwaukee's PG Brandon Jennings and seeing if he comes out with the Bobby Brown/Gumby cut. What, like you don't remember the 'Every Little Step' video? Fine-
Atlanta is relatively healthy, and if F Josh Smith remembers that he can't shoot outside of 12 feet and dominates as I think he should, Atlanta in 5.
Miami vs. Boston
I have heard it already, Boston is old, ripe for an upset. First, a 5 seed beating a 4 seed is not an upset. These two teams, on paper, are going in the opposite direction. I will take old and battle tested over stupid youth everyday of the week. And in this day of basketball, it's all about the PG, and the C's have a HUGE advantage in Rajon Rondo vs. Carlos Arroyo. Boston as a team needs to look at Rondo and let him go attack. But there will be dumb officiating in this series, because that's just how it's going to go. The Celtics are more talented in the starting 5 overall and only lose 1 position battle, SG, where Dwayne Wade is going to average 30 pts in this series. Won't matter if Boston won't let it matter, but it'll take 6 games for the Celtics to pull it off.
Charlotte vs. Orlando
I feel bad that we're going to have to listen about Larry Brown will he/won't he leave for Philly after this series bologna. Charlotte has talent, and Brown can coach. But you can't coach height, and Orlando has it. Oh, and more talent. Magic in 5.
Western Conference
Utah vs. Denver
The latest news is that Utah F Andrei Kirilenko is out for this series. That does change things up a bit. This will be a fun series to watch, if you like watching teams run (I do). Carmelo Anthony is ready to blow up, and without Kirilenko there to check him, it's going to happen. Denver is one of those teams you don't know which version will show up. This series could go 7 or 4. I'm taking the Nuggets in 6.
Oklahoma City vs. Fakers
Yes, I hate LA. I was born to do it. And Phil Jackson is weaving his magic peyote bullshit smoke already. Phil, if you didn't jump on teams that were on the verge of winning championships, you'd be a hippie used up has been teaching philosophy at the University of Montana. Anyway, I'm glad that the country will get to watch OKC and league scoring champ F Kevin Durant. I hope he tears Ron Artest a new one, but I guarantee a chippy-fest, multiple technical fouls, and LA's frontline (or hell, just Pau Gasol) to be just plain better than the Thunder. And I can't tell you how much I wish this was in Seattle, you have no idea. Fakers in 6.
San Antonio vs. Dallas
This is the series you kinda hope goes to 7, but San Antonio is getting old. And much like Kobe Bryant on the Fakers, Tim Duncan of the Spurs has a ton of miles on those knees. But he was rested a lot during the season for the playoffs. I think Dallas is just too deep. If this comes down to the 8 guys on each squad, I like San Antonio's chances. I've flip-flopped in my head on this one, but I still have a like for San Antonio. Spurs in 7. And say hello to DeJuan Blair and every team that passed on the double-double machine off the bench.
Portland vs. Phoenix
Yet another series that would be so much better if a star wasn't hurt. Instead, Portland G Brandon Roy just had surgery to repair torn cartilage and is out for the series. Well, he'll have all summer to rest up and rehab. Without him, he will watch from the bench or a suite Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire pick and roll this team to death. It's going to be a clinic that you could probably watch old white guys (yes, I include myself in that group) at the rec center do all the livelong day. Phoenix in 5.
Two quick hockey notes-if you think I'm happy by calling the Avs over the Sharks, you're damn right. They leave San Jose with a split and losing last night in OT. Ask anyone that knows anything about hockey and if they'd be happy as an 8 seed walking out with a split, and the answer is going to get a resounding 'Hells Yeah!'
Now, when the B's win in Buffalo (puck drops in 10 minutes, yikes), yes, you heard me, I said when and not if, I'll be happy. The Bruins simply need more traffic in front of Sabres G Ryan Miller and all will be right with the world.
Happy Saturday!
