Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
In case you haven't heard the news, Denver Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen has released a statement that the team will now attempt to trade the douchebag QB. Sorry, that last part were my words.
Here's the statement:
"Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."
I can't stop laughing at this fiasco, the childish and boorish behavior of a professional athlete, the idiocy of the owner, the fact that people can't see the guy behind the curtain pulling the strings, and some of the fans reactions to this-never realizing one thing. I'm going to break this all down, starting here;
The Fiasco
First and foremost, the head coach of the Broncos is no longer Mike Shanahanigans, it's Josh McDaniels. Josh is part of the coaching tree from Bill Belichick, which has produced the current head coaches of the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and Notre Dame. Whether or not you like it makes no difference. But you do need to know your history lessons, so here's another one for you. Belichick coached under who? Bill Parcells, a man who has rebuilt now 5 teams into winners (my definition being that they went from crap to a playoff team). Don't believe me? Fine, let your mind wander to what the NY Giants, New England Patriots, NY Jets, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins were before he showed up. Now zip it.
How does this tie into this fiasco? Anyone remember the name Terry Glenn? Bill Parcells loved the guy, Belichick wouldn't put up with his crap, cut him. Same thing with Lawyer Milloy. The New England Patriots, with Belichick and Scott Pioli devised a value system that they put on each position, much like Jimmy Johnson did with players and draft picks back in 1989. In doing so, you don't pay too much for certain positions, and you in turn have depth. Rock Solid defense along with an offense that can move the chains on 3rd and 2 is the staple of these teams. Don't believe me, again? Fine, name the running backs on the Pats 1st Super Bowl winning team. I can do it, but that's because I'm a dork (I'm okay with it).
So, how does all this tie into the fiasco? Simple, really. When you're a new coach, and your teams have needs-as the Broncos clearly do-and you have a valuable commodity that some people may want, they'll call you. Josh McDaniels didn't want to trade Cutler, he got a phone call, heck, he got multiple phone calls from teams asking about Cutler and 3 way trades. You have to answer that phone. You never know when you get your Herschel Walker trade offer. That trade set up Dallas for numerous Super Bowls. More importantly, why wouldn't Coach McDaniels want the guy he just spent the whole season guiding to 11 wins, Matt Cassel? Matt Cassel plus some draft picks for Cutler?-Heck, who wouldn't be intrigued. McDaniels has worked wonders with Cassel and Tom Brady, who just happens to be a 3 time Super Bowl winner and owns the single season record for TD passes. Maybe, just maybe McDaniels knows a thing or two about QBs, especially since he just took a guy who hasn't started a game since high school and got him to 21 TDs to 11 INTs. Cutler's numbers? 25 and 18. Thanks for playing.
And then Cutler's feelings got hurt. What cracks me up the most is that in a matter of less than a month he went from 'how could you think about trading me?' to 'Trade Me!'....best of luck in your new home Cutler. I can't imagine what McDaniels could have done with your arm and ability to roll out, along with Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Jabar Gaffney. Way to think it through, genius.
The behavior of 'The Player'
I did love the dig that McDaniels put out a few days ago, not mentioning Cutler by name. It's straight out of the Parcells playbook. Some things you have to earn a certain level of respect. Cutler may have made a Pro Bowl, but that means little. It's a popularity contest where the last 3 weeks aren't counted. Believe me, if they were, Cutler probably wouldn't have been named an All-Star. Here's what I wrote on 3/15/2009:
Boohoo-Broncos QB Jay Cutler and his folks have both put up their houses in Colorado for sale. All because it was speculated that the team might trade Cutler. Please, get out the WHHHHAAAmbulance-this is pathetic. Last I checked, Cutler is 17-20 in his NFL career, and better yet, was 2-4 in his last 6 starts this past season. The best part of that is the fact that if Cutler would have led his team to a win in any of the last 3 games he would have made the playoffs. Now, I don't lay the Broncos record all at Cutler's feet. But he's complaining like he should be untradeable. This is the NFL, no one is untradeable-more importantly, it's a business. So now you've got your parents involved in this. What the hell is this, little league?? Fine Cutler, take your ball and go home. Yes, you have a great arm. So did Heath Shuler and a zillion other guys who've played QB in the NFL. Your mouth is already legendary. You took on the legend of John Elway out here in Broncos country, not a wise move. Frankly, I hate the Broncos, so I could care less. But radio announcer Scott Hastings has called you out as a 'bitch', and you have no rebuttal. Sad. Jay, here's what you need to do. Shut up and play. Play for your teammates, play for the fans. You've done nothing to earn all these accolades, and now it's coming out how whiny and sensitive you truly are. That's the funny thing about QBing in the NFL-there are only 32 slots available for your job, and because you had a tiff with your new boss you decide to pout. You're not 4 anymore. Suck it up champ, and realize that you could learn something from your new coach. Hell, he just got a guy who hasn't started a game in 6 years to an 11-4 record with 21TDs and 11 INTs. What do you think he could do with your arm? Nothing, if you're using that nickel plated head of yours.
What the heck happened in 2 weeks???? Simple, Cutler turned into a little baby. Not returning calls, from the Coach who can call you plays to make you successful or the Owner who strokes your paycheck? Congrats to the team that gets this prima donna. Cassel won 11 games this year, Cutler has 17 career wins in 2 and a half seasons. Maybe Cutler turns into the QB that keeps both teams in the game. Cutler is acting like a junior high school girl who heard a rumor about herself and is all hurt. Get over yourself. Frankly, I hope he gets traded to Detroit. Then I can pick Calvin Johnson in the 2nd round of my football draft and collect some money!
The Idiocy of the Owner
Well, Pat Bowlen owns this whole thing. Ever since he fired Mike Shanahanigans, he's handled this all wrong. In brief, he should have called Cutler and told him that the Broncos were getting a great coach to use Cutler's ability to its fullest. Once Bowlen stated that he could no longer have the coach be the GM, he should have stuck to it. He didn't, and it's cost him a little bit in the PR department.
Now, after the first salvo of Cutler being hurt came out in the media, Bowlen should not have been amicable with a concall between McDaniels, the paper GM Xanders, Cutler and his agent. He should have flown with McDaniels to wherever Cutler was, go into a conference room, lock the door and hash this whole thing out. He's the Owner, the one guy who can do this. Instead, he let others control things, and now he's trying to save face. Bad move, all the way around. However, with all that being said, I happen to agree with this move. Of course, he should never have had a press release, because he might not get as much as he could have for Cutler if he had kept it quiet. Live and learn, maybe.
The Man Behind The Curtain
Bus Cook. Brett Favre's agent. Connected any dots yet? Have you not noticed how this has played out? It just sounds way too familiar to me, like when my back is to the TV and Kobe Bryant is talking-and I swear it's Michael Jordan talking. The QB is hurt that it comes down to this, blah, blah, blah. Bus is always involved. Hmmm, common denominator seems to be Cook trying to get his client more money and a new contract. Mind you, that's his job, and I can respect that. But not in the manner he's gone about it...now in the case of two starting QBs. I'm just sayin', seriously.
The Fan Reaction
This is where I'm laughing. I've already read that the new coach's name is McDickhead. Wow, how original. What, was McCrappy taken? Lame with another side of lame. Bury the team all you want, but you know you'll be gobbling merchandise and tickets up. So cut the crap. And get over it. Here's a little note to all those that are complaining that if/when the Broncos trade Cutler that Chris Simms will be the starting QB-He's won a division (no!) in a much tougher division than the AFC West, which means he's been in a playoff game (get out!), with a lot less talent-check the roster and look who Simms was throwing to-and lastly, while Cutler played all noble with diabetes...Simms ruptured his spleen in a game and still played. So I'd say he's plenty tough enough, and he's got talent around him he's never had before. And if not him, go sign Byron Leftwich to play statue and chuck it down the field.
Could they have done anything different?
Now, in my estimation the Broncos are wrong in trading Cutler. My suggestion? They shoulda suspended his punk ass. See how he likes it with being suspended for insubordination and being a detriment to the team...oh, and not getting paid. Funny thing about all of us, we can talk a bunch until someone can effect our money. Weird how that goes, huh? Let him sit at home and stew. If he loves the game, he'd suck it up. Don't be shocked to see Cutler in Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, the Jets or my sleeper....Carolina.
Look, I know this was long, but I wanted to write something a little bit in depth. If you've got a topic you want me to cover, put it in the comments, text me, email me, call me or put up the Bat Signal so I know.

Victory, on such a personal note
Somedays you just need a 'W'. Ever been there? Come on, everyone has. Well, whether or not I've expressed it, be it in writing or in speaking, I needed a 'W'. And there it was. Today, for me, total victory. Maybe it was the stars aligning, maybe it was me catching a break-face it, a bunch of breaks, but I consider today a complete Victory. There will be no post-game commentary of the day letting itself get beat. I just got the best of it today.
Great feeling, Victory. I don't even want to go to sleep right now because I'm so stinkin' happy. It's been so long since I've had a day like today that I almost forgot what a great day feels like. Now, don't go thinking I'm all depressed and a sad sack. That's not it. There's been the funk, that's long gone. Just no joy. And life with no joy is just damn sad. So today, I don't know what it was, maybe the full night of sleep, maybe the content of knowing I'm trying. It could be that I firmly believe that good things will happen. Maybe doing things for the people you give a crap about can give you a boost.
For me, that was the cherry on top of my big ol' ice cream sundae of a day. I got to do for someone in my world, and it made them happy. Someday later I'll explain this a little bit better. Okay, a lot better.
What it boils down to is that this stuff really all happened in succession today:
My car was saved by the dealership service center-how often does that happen? I'm betting more often than not, it's just that no one talks about it.
A job I don't want had something happen that locked it up for me that there's no way I'm working for these guys. It just isn't a good fit on so many levels.
I have a phone call scheduled for tomorrow that could turn into a job prospect.
I helped my brother get a t-shirt he's been looking for since Christmas.
I've been asked to help a friend of mine whose son is in a bit of trouble with bullies and wants to learn how to defend himself with words, not fists (there's a time and place for everything, but verbal warfare happens to be a specialty of mine).
And the last one I'm not sharing with the internet world just yet, I get to savor it, because it made me happy....so there. Sometimes you have to hold on to something that's just yours and yours alone for a little while before sharing with the group. I'm just sayin'.
For now, if you have a friend you haven't spoken with in awhile, email them, call them, just get in contact. You'd be amazed the power of friendship and what it means to the other person.
I'll get to sports in the tomorrow. I think.

Two great games, and one wasn't basketball
So I went 1-1 yesterday. But I'll take my one loss, because it was a great game.
On to my picks, and a note about a game near my old hometown, where a bunch of kids I went to high school with ended up going to college.
Oklahoma vs. North Carolina
Look, I know a lot of people out there think that Blake Griffin will dominate Tyler Hansbrough, and they may be right. But last time I checked, Hansbrough did win Player of the Year last year, and his numbers are pretty steady. Also, there is no way on this earth that Crocker for OU hits that many 3's like he did against Syracuse. Sorry, not today. I think UNC wins, convincingly.
Michigan State vs. Louisville
Talk about a contrast in styles, the running and pressing of Louisville versus the bruising of Michigan State. As much as I'd like to take the Spartans, I just don't see it happening. Louisville goes 9 guys deep, and that in the end will spell doomsday for the kids from East Lansing, MI. Oh, and I'll admit it, while I didn't want to watch Michigan State/Kansas after my boys got whooped, it was a decent game. There, I said it.
Now, the game of the day yesterday wasn't Villanova/Pitt. Just because a game ends with a shot in the last second doesn't make it a classic. But this game does deserve to be viewed again, because it was a great back and forth game.
The game of the day yesterday was UNH coming back from being down 2 goals to tie and then beat North Dakota in OT yesterday. I watched this game, and I'm still in shock. UNH didn't look like it belonged on the same ice most of this game, the puck was constantly in their zone (see, I know hockey jargon!) and when they did have it, they couldn't control it.
The only thing that ticked me off was the lack of passion from the fans, I could hear the ice, people! These are my people up in ManchVegas, NH, get loud already. You've had the practice, St. Patty's Day wasn't even two weeks ago. Just watch the NCAA ice tourney, too, you won't be saddened at all. It's fun!
Well, I've got my coffee, off to read the news and job hunt after the games today.
Happy Sunday!

In a word...blech
That's how bad I was with my picks yesterday. Well, I was correct about the margin of victory in the DU hockey, except they lost 4-2...oops. We'll call yesterday a mush day. I went 1-4. That's rare. But what can you do.
I wish my boys had shown up for the first 10 minutes last night, but I knew from the tip it was going to be one of those games. It happens. If I had to pick who will be in the finals for this tournament, I'd have to go with North Carolina and Louisville. They're just dominating teams. Of course, Louisville has had an easy path. Luck of the draw, it's just the way it goes sometimes.
As for today, here we go:
UConn vs. Missouri
I'd love for Missouri to win this, as I despise UConn with a passion. But I don't see it happening. UConn has a very good point guard in AJ Price and plenty of depth. I like this game to hit in the 90's, up and down the court, with UConn winning.
Pittsburgh vs. Villanova
A Big East matchup. I know everyone will say Villanova is hot, so they should win. Hold on here. Pitt was #1 in the country twice, and while they don't win pretty, they do win. My pick is that they advance to the Final Four tonight.
I'll be done with my puppy-sitting duties in a little bit, and I'll miss the little guys. But I'm looking forward to sleeping the whole night thru, if it's possible. I'm overtired, but I had fun.
Happy Saturday to you!

The definition of irony
So, before I get to my picks for tonight, I now have something quite humorous (to me, at least) to share. A few years ago I hired a company to help me write my resume. I will not say it was a rewrite, because that would be beyond disingenuous. Instead it changed my mindset on all sorts of things, and I did learn a lot about myself, and my resume is pretty darn good. Others are impressed, I happen to like it. Hopefully it gets me towards something I want going forward.
However, the irony of it all is that as of next week this company will be shutting its doors. Are you kidding me? These guys should be neck-deep in clients. I've had some people send me their resume, and they're atrocious, misspellings, bad grammar, horrible form, you name it, I've seen it. I feel for the person I communicate with on almost a weekly basis, as they've been great to work with. No tangible results just yet, but they will come.
As for yesterday's picks, well, I was correct on the first two games, not so much on the second two. Oh well. It's part of the fun.
On to tonight's games
Louisville vs. Arizona
As much as I'd like to pick Arizona to upset the Cardinals, I just don't see it. Louisville has depth, and Arizona has virtually none. It was a nice run, but I'm taking Louisville by 15.
Oklahoma vs. Syracuse
Scared? A little. Worried? A lot. Why? Because Blake Griffin is still a little peeved at Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim for cutting him from the Olympic Select team. So if Griffin wants to play all mad, then it could be a long day for my boys. But I can't and won't pick against them...you gots to have faith. You all can hate on Eric Devendorf all you want, but the kid can score. Hopefully he gets 25 tonight and my boys stifle Griffin on the inside with the 2-3 zone.
Michigan State vs. Kansas
Yawn. Yup, I said it. I have no desire to watch this game, and hope Kansas blows out the Spartans. It's just not fun basketball to watch.
North Carolina vs. Gonzaga
This should be the marquee game of the night, and I can see why. I just wish I could be in Memphis! My boys playing and then this game, now that's a good time. I don't see the toe problem being an issue for Manny Lawson, but I do see Jeremy Pargo being a bit of a pain. This should be a fun game. I'm going with Gonzaga and rooting for Matt Bouldin, a Colorado kid.
Now, don't forget, the Hockey NCAA's is starting up, and I get to watch in a little bit, because DU is on playing Miami (Ohio). I'm taking the home kids by 2 goals, and I have no idea why. Just Cuz, how's that?
Happy Friday to you all!

Sweet 16 picks, and then some
Alright, time to get down to business today. I'm puppy-sitting, which has been kind of fun. It's snowing crazy here in the south suburbs of Denver, so I might as well make my picks and get some company research done today. Productivity is the name of the game. Staying focused will be the other issue to take care of today.
The Picks:
UConn vs. Purdue
Look, I don't care about this supposed text message 'scandal' that Yahoo! Sports reported about yesterday. I don't even think this will distract the kids from UConn. In fact, I think this makes them more focused. I think this will be a damn good game and kind of hope it turns into a running game for a bit. I think UConn wins, but it will be a game that goes down to the last possession or two.
Pittsburgh vs. Xavier
This game should be in the low 60's, and I wouldn't be shocked at all if Xavier wins. I just think Pittsburgh gets over the hump of not beating a team better than a 6 seed, and it happens tonight. Watch for all the fun on rebounds, this is going to be 'man country' type stuff.
Memphis vs. Missouri
Now this should be a track meet, both teams pressing and running. I wouldn't be shocked to see a game in the 80's with a ton of turnovers for each team. So, who to pick? I'm taking Memphis, on the simple fact that a lot of guys on this team played in the national championship game last year and know how to get things done.
Duke vs. Villanova
This will be interesting for Villanova, since they won't be playing in front of a home crowd, like they had in the first two rounds. Side note here, how is it remotely fair to not only put Villanova in Philly, but their 2nd round game vs. UCLA had what equaled a 10 AM tipoff time for the kids from Westwood? I'm just sayin'. Regardless, this is the marquee game of today, and I think the kids from Duke pull it off. But they better contain Dante Cunningham, otherwise he's bound to end up with 22 & 12.
So someone wants me to explain why they should keep watching this tournament. Well, first, the format. I love the one and done aspect of this stuff. Second, the stories some of these kids have. I know everyone has a story, heck, I've even sprinkled mine in here from time to time-ok, fine, all the time, but it's my blog, so there. Third, there's money involved. Not mine this year, but other people have plenty of money on this stuff. Best time I've ever had watching this stuff was Vegas a couple of years ago, to feel the swing of a game amongst 400 of your closest non-friends was fun. And face it, I rarely use that word, so you can figure out what it meant to me. Fourth, you're getting to see these kids at their highest level of performance. If their team loses, it won't be due to lack of effort. And finally, cuz I said so-does that count?
I wish the NCAA hockey tournament had this much publicity, because that would kick ass too. I think some major network is missing the boat by not really getting this on TV like they do a spring training baseball game. I love baseball, but I really could care less at this point in time, not when the brackets are revealed. So much fun to read up on this stuff. Fine, I'm a sports dork. But I don't care. It's not that hard to pull me in to something to watch it. Hell, I watched 'Tough Love' on VH1 the other night because the guy who runs the show was zapping women on dates when they went down the wrong conversation path. Calling that display fantastic just doesn't do it justice.
Now, on a completely different note, I swear I want this guy to become a citizen of this country and do this to our Congress:
If only someone could get their head from out of a)their own or b)someone else's rear end, maybe we could get someone to answer some questions about this tyranny running amok with citizens funding all sorts of crappy ideas.
On to the job search and staying warm inside.
Happy Thursday!

An interesting note
Did anyone else know this stuff about Harvey Milk? And who saw that damn movie?
Well, here's some info that I'm pretty sure Paul Harvey, God rest his soul, would've uncovered for us, just maybe.
I think more than the Hollyweird elite, CNN and GLBT commission need to see a movie before you can win any award for it.
I'm just sayin'.

exhausted
I'm flat out beat from the last two days....no I'm not working out. I don't lift weights, those things are heavy. You go lift them. As long as I can get out of bed, I'm good.
So, why so tired? Because I got a job offer that I don't want. It's like the really fat girl who thinks you are cute, except that your friends only tell you 'some girl thinks you're cute', they neglect to tell you it's the whale that's trying to squeeze into her size 14 jeans.....problem is, she was a size 14 3 years ago, and then she got her job at Cinnabon in the mall, and all bets were off after that. So, when you see who it is, much like this job offer, you go from excited to 'Aw, crap'.
As for the job, there are numerous reasons not to take it. One-they needed an answer in less than 8 hours. So I sent a counter-offer. Even if they met all of my demands, which aren't necessarily reasonable, I won't take the job. While I may want to someday run my own bar or diner, I don't want to run this one. It would be in Vegas with some people of questionable character. Not my direct bosses, mind you, but their family. I won't go into all the details, because it's not fair and if I did put it out there then everyone who reads this would attempt to call me a liar. But I swear, what I know, have seen and heard is all very much true. I wish it weren't, but it really is.
So why should I go? I honestly can't think of a good reason. Not one. And to me, just taking a job for the sake of a job is pointless. Once the newness wears off, then what do you have left? Your day to day life/job. That's what you have. It's been about 36 hours since I made my counter, and I have this strange feeling that the two people I interviewed with are dealing with more drama than they'd ever admit to. Sorry, but I can't walk into that. It's not right, it's not my place, and I've sort of been down the path to believe that I'd kind of be like a Dr. Phil. Sorry, but not now. I've got my own stuff to deal with, and for the most part, I'm doing well. My advice on relationships is really quite simple-take away the money and the sex, what do you have left? If you can't have a decent conversation and some laughs along the way, knowing that you enjoy that persons company, then don't be together. Maybe it's just my state of mind, but I'm noticing something among people I know-those that wait for certain things usually (and by usually I mean about 80%) succeed. Those relationships that are based on material things or crazy sex don't last. They can, but eventually they are going to have to discuss what the heck is going on in their worlds and see if the ol' hopes & dreams align in any way, shape or form.
For example, could I ever really truthfully date a Yankees fan? I know, it sounds ridiculous. But think it out. If they were a true fan of the game and were a fan along the lines of me, where they don't love everything that their favorite team does, then maybe. But if they're just that rah-rah in your face type of person...good grief, NO! And that is just an ancillary thing. In the long run, I really don't care who your root for, so long as it's not communists, PETA, National Endowment of the Arts or Planned Parenthood. Why? I don't believe in any of them, and I for damn sure don't want any of my money to go to any of those causes, taxes or otherwise.
I believe in the real true free economy. You know where you find that? Ebay. Think about it all the way through and you'll see my point. It's a place where people put their trust in their fellow man to deliver what they've purchased in a timely fashion. Don't do it, and you get a bad review. In turn, maybe people won't buy from you.
Now, to go back to my point on who you root for. Other than PETA, the others are somehow getting money from the government. Well, the government doesn't have any money. They tax us and then give the money to someone else. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts. Sure sounds like a good idea, and I'd be on board if that money went to help fund after school art programs, or got supplies for art trips, classes, etc. I think it would be a great concept. But then it happens. It always happens. Someone says that someone else should pay $25,000 for a blue streak down a 3 foot canvas. Sorry, not buying it. Nor should anyone else. Let the free economy figure out how much that thing is worth. If an 'artist' can do that, why don't musicians or comics do that? I know why...you have to prove you can bring in an audience in order to get paid. While I don't think Dane Cook is all that funny, he did manage to pack TD BankNorth Garden and Madison Square Garden. For a comedy show, that's around 19,000 people. Whether you like him or not, or even mock him like everyone else, he does pack a venue.
I don't like Planned Parenthood for numerous reasons, I won't get into them here. But the most prevalent reason is because their name is a lie. How many people go to one of those clinics if they are trying to plan a family? That place should be called 'Holy-shit-I-can't-believe-I-slept-with-that-guy-once-and-now-I'm-knocked-up-I'm-never-drinking-Jager-again' Place.
So, to sum up, I'm not really going to take that job in Vegas. It's not the right fit, for oh so many reasons. But I'll admit, it was nice to be wanted for a minute.
Now, there are like 3 jobs that are out there that I would really love to do. And they are all back east. I'm still researching all sorts of things, but I keep coming up against something. The realm of stuff I like to do, well there's just not as strong of a market here in Denver as there is back home. Doesn't mean I'll stop looking in Denver, but if I really want to keep going down a certain path, it's looking more and more like I'm going to be back east. All sorts of fun with that decision.
As for right now, I'm dog-sitting. A dog and a puppy. It was rather amusing to have them hop on the bed as I was trying to get situated for sleeping..and then they pinched me in! I'm just not used to being pinned in on each side when I'm sleeping (sorry to disappoint if you thought I had some sleazy sex story to give you here), but you have to be cognisant of the puppy, since he might weigh 5 pounds, and I weigh just a wee bit more than that. But they are fun.
Well, back to research for jobs...but I leave you with a personal favorite comic of mine:

Respectable, and I can't sleep
Alright, I'll take 6-2 on the last day of the weekend of the tournament. Face it, it's a crapshoot anyways, and it's fun for some folks to talk about on Monday at work. Since I don't have a job, I'll just type about it.
There, that's done with.
Congrats go out to the Boston Bruins, who finally played a whole 60 minutes. Funny how things work out when you play the whole game. Yeah, I said it. In closing out the game and maybe getting some bounces go their way, the B's locked up the division and didn't allow the winningest goalie in NHL history to tack on another one. Well played, fellas.
Why am I writing this blog now? Because I can't get to sleep. Better to try and do something 'productive' than to toss and turn in bed. At least that's my theory for the evening/morning.
I've got emails to get out to people to check in. Try and not be jealous.
Happy Monday!

Picks, and a point of clarification
A damn fine effort on my part, 8-0 on Saturday. I'll get to my picks for Sunday's game, but I wanted to clear up something I put in my last post-I never went out of my way to hurt anyone on a basketball court, never threw an elbow, ever. My Mom would've dragged me off the court. That's not how play in my house. However, I'd box anyone out, and if someone was being a bit chippy, well, they got a whole lotta rump under the rim. Hopefully that makes sense.
Now, onto the picks:
Arizona St. vs. Syracuse
Jonny Flynn to the rescue. I don't think that ASU can handle the guards for Syracuse...actually, that's what I'm hoping. I also don't believe that ASU will have an active zone defense. Of course I'm picking Syracuse-where have you been all this time reading this blog?? They're my boys!
Wisconsin vs. Xavier
you might want to consider not DVRing this game, or hiding the women and children. This is going to be some ugly basketball. Played in the low 60's. But I'm going with Xavier.
Dayton vs. Kansas
Kansas just doesn't impress me all that much. Yes, they did an amazing job this season after losing 5 guys to the NBA or overseas, but that means nothing right now. Dayton is a very good team, and could give the Jayhawks fits in the halfcourt game. However, Cole Aldrich is too much in the middle, Kansas pulls away late, by 10.
Cleveland St. vs. Arizona
I'm taking Cleveland St. It's strictly a hunch, but I have to go with my gut on this one.
Oklahoma State vs. Pittsburgh
Now this game is going to be fun. Kind of like a football game, it will be physical, but the athletes will shine in this one. I'm going with Pitt, and DeJuan Blair becomes a household name with a 20/15 game.
Marquette vs. Missouri
I feel bad for Marquette, really I do. They would be so much better with a healthy senior PG. It shows up how much they miss him in this game, with Missouri pressing Marquette into numerous turnovers, and winning this game going away.
USC vs. Michigan State
Damn, shouldn't this be a Rose Bowl game? As good as Michigan State was all season, I think it's buh-bye time after running into USC. The Trojans play awesome D, and Taj Gibson is a player that MSU has no experience against. Sorry Big 10 champ, you're done in this one.
Siena vs. Louisville
I'll take Louisville in this game, but not after Siena puts a very large scare into the kids from Freedom Hall in the first half.
I doubt I go 8-0 with these picks, but I think I'll be getting better as the tournament goes.
Happy Sunday!

A Little more like it
For a little less than a day I thought I'd lost my ability to pick games. Thank goodness for yesterday, where I went 13-3. Of course, all the great finishes and endings had to come late last night. It's the nature of the beast, nothing you can do about it. Other than enjoy it.
Oh, and since KG is back for the Celtics, a fine Friday night it was.
On to my picks for today--
Maryland vs. Memphis
Memphis better be awake for this game from the get-go, or they will lose, and it would be ugly. I still think that they have far too much talent for Maryland, but if the Terps show up like they did against Cal, anything can happen. I'm going with Memphis in a tight one, by less than 10.
LSU vs. North Carolina
LSU wins if there is no Ty Lawson, plain and simple. If Lawson plays, even for 15 minutes, the Tar Heels win, and by a good margin.
Texas vs. Duke
Texas could easily win this game, but they won't. I'm picking Duke by 15. Just my gut talking on this one.
Texas A&M vs. UConn
UConn by 20, and it won't be that close. Not with Coach Jim Calhoun back on the sidelines, they are going to take it to the Aggies.
Michigan vs. Oklahoma
I think Oklahoma will dominate the boards and win this game. But a bigger issue is what will happen to Blake Griffin? The kid (yes, he's just a kid) is amazing, and yet this season he has been punched in the nuts, elbowed in the head, punched, kicked and on Thursday he was flipped over in yet another classless attempt to goad him into a technical foul, or maybe even an ejection from the game. Too bad this isn't like hockey, where there would be a goon to just wreck shop on these clowns ruining a perfectly good game. I hated playing against people like this, and eventually, would just pop them. I've chipped teeth, had a busted nose, dislocated plenty of fingers and thumbs, snapped ankles, blown out a knee, but only when it was done with intent would I get pissed. How does Griffin not haul off and belt someone? And who punches someone in the nuts during a sporting event??? That stuff doesn't happen in MMA! No place for it on a basketball court. When he leaves after this season, I hope he puts it on the conferences, coaches and even the NCAA to clean up this crap.
Western Kentucky vs. Gonzaga
Well there, Hilltoppers from WKU, it was fun on Thursday, but your train stops here. Gonzaga is playing very well, and they have way too much talent. Here's what I'd like to throw out there-the starting 2 guard for the Gonzaga is from Highlands Ranch, Colorado. How did CU, CSU or even Air Force let this kid get out of state??? He was Mr. Basketball 2 years in a row. See, this is why those schools may make the tourney, but until they put money into those programs, they will not be big players, even in their own conference.
UCLA vs. Villanova
Eric Maynor, you almost did it. UCLA has no business being in this game, and it's a home game (in Philly) for 'Nova. America, get to know the name Scottie Reynolds, he's putting up 30 today.
Purdue vs. Washington
So, I've had to ask myself, is Washington just a really good team and I don't believe in them, is that why I pick against them, like all the time, this year? And that answer is a resounding "YES". So do I get off my own little train? Hell no, you dance with who brung ya. I'm going with Purdue, they shoot the ball far too well. Oh, and this game will be in the 50's, as both can play defense really well. Of course, now that I've stated that, it'll turn into a damn track meet.
Those are the picks, but something else just crossed my path, and I've got to write about it. I don't check my mail everyday, but who does, really? Yesterday was the day I decided to finally go and take care of that, after a couple of days. Lo and behold, there's my nemisis, Sports Illustrated. If you've read this for more than a week you know how much I loathe them pushing their liberal agenda. So I'm always weary opening the pages. And they finally did something right!! So, in the spirit of rewarding those who do something good-even though I haven't finished reading the whole issue-I'm so thankful they put this article about Minnesota high school hockey in there.
Can you possibly imagine being in high school and you play in a game with 15,000 people cheering for you? How awesome would that be? Sorry, I know I'm wordy and even I can't fathom that. I've always dreamed of filling out a 5,000 seat venue for stand up, but that's as far as it goes. 15,000 for a high school hockey game-that's outstanding on so many levels, and it will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Look, I honestly wouldn't know about this unless I knew someone who told me about all this beforehand. And I owe them an apology. I may have said some things during the tenure of our friendship that were dismissive, and I think I only made that mistake once, and it hasn't happened since. I was so wrong. Granted, it was about hockey, but I used to think I had to know everything. Turns out, if you're the smartest person in the room, you can't learn a whole bunch. Who knew? So every time that I've spoken, texted, IM'd, facebook'd, etc. with this person, it's been in the back of my mind. Hockey is HUGE in Minnesota, like hoops is big in Indiana, football in northern Ohio, and baseball in the Dominican. Mea Culpa. I should never have dismissed the notion that a sport could be bigger in different part of the country than where I'm from. Know what's huge where I'm from? Alcoholism and the idea that anything or anyone fantastic could be past Worcester. I'm living proof. My life got so much better after I left, when I left, and why I left that I can't ever really describe it. Damn tipping points....
The only thing that the SI story made me feel slightly, and I do mean slightly, is the kids from Edina. They made a pact in the 8th grade to play high school hockey, never leave to take on a better chance for themselves at junior nationals, etc. in order to go for a title together. You rarely see that at any level now. But it's really nice to know it's still out there. Look, we've got 5th graders being called fantastic prospects in basketball, how can that not warp a kid, and his family?
Maybe hockey's the last bastion of true team, team spirit, real fans. I've only known swearing and putting down someone as being a fan. I now know that you can actually clap for a great effort, and not in the slow-clapping douchebag way.
All I can say is this-add the Minnesota high school tourney to my list of things I want to see, along with a Rose Bowl, the Big East tourney (and that may happen next year, if I can ever get a job), the ACC tournament, and the College World Series.
Oh, and I'm gonna need a partner in crime to go watch these hockey games with me...gee, I wonder if I know anyone like that.....
Happy Saturday, I'm brewing up some Dunkin' Donuts coffee, so I'm looking forward to starting my day.
Oh, and since KG is back for the Celtics, a fine Friday night it was.

Not a solid effort...at all
Okay, so my picks yesterday were not good. I went 9-7, and if that's good in your world, then we have another discussion to have. I would've needed to go at least 10-6 to break even. Hey, in the world of gambling, you need to pay the juice, so I'd be in the hole, and not in the good way.
I honestly thought about opening up an online account to wager on this stuff yesterday morning, but my better judgement prevailed-Thank God!! What kind of out of work degenerate thinks it's okay to try and win some money? Well, not this one at least.
Now before I get to my picks, a small political note for all out there. If you are one of those people shaking your index finger in shame at the head of AIG, start pointing it at yourself. And then put yourself into the shoes of someone who was to have received a retention bonus. Granted, who wants to retain someone who can't manage money for a company that deals with finance and insurance, but I'm getting off topic. All this posturing and pandering on your idiot box is nothing more than huffing and puffing when Congress KNEW exactly what would happen. How did they know? Well, AIG's got a pretty big HQ in Connecticut, home of Chris Dodd. Funny thing, he wrote in the legislation for this 'stimulus' bill that all retention bonuses, etc. that were written in before this funding became available would/could be paid out. So he knew that this would happen, and then lied about it on CNN before they caught him, and then he fessed up to it. So did that hack Obama. By the way, speaking of our President, anyone catch his dig on the Special Olympics last night. I'm just sayin', John McCain makes that joke, his head is being requested by most of DC. But not the Captain of 'Hope Floats', nope, not him. Even Bill Clinton must be looking around thinking this is amazing. Oh, and as far as AIG is concerned, instead of people bitching about the 165 million in bonus money, how about you get mad at the big picture, the 3 different runs at taxpayer money?? That bonus money is less that .01% of the total money given to AIG. Get mad about that. Ask why citizens have to prop up this failing entity.
Hey, if we fail as citizens what happens to us? Why does no one get to learn the lesson of failing?
Alright, back to hoops!
Stephen F. Austin vs. Syracuse
my boys better show up huge today. I just hope they got some sleep after that Big East tournament run. And please, can Eric Devendorf not pose after hitting a 3? Please?
Tennessee vs. Oklahoma St.
I have no idea which Tennessee team will show up. But I think I've seen them enough this year to 'know' that they just aren't a cohesive unit this whole season. My pick is the Cowboys.
Utah St. vs. Marquette
Injuries are a crappy thing. Ever since Marquette PG Dominic James broke his foot a few weeks ago, Marquette can't win anything. Utah St. is a well coached team that plays well. I'm giving Marquette the benefit here, thinking they are too strong up front.
North Dakota St. vs. Kansas
Kansas needs to be ready to play. NDSU will not be a pushover. In fact, I have it on good authority that it only takes about 5 hours in a car to get from NDSU campus to Minneapolis for this game. Hello road trip-but it will be for not. Kansas wins by 15.
Temple vs. Arizona St.
I want to like Arizona St., but Temple is a pain to play. Temple's that team that if all the pistons are firing, you can't beat them, you get frustrated, you do dumb things. But Arizona St.'s starting backcourt has been together since high school. I like the Sun Devils by less than 10.
East Tennessee St. vs. Pittsburgh
I think the game will be close, only because Pitt doesn't really blow anyone out. Pitt by 15, and don't be surprised to see them work in a matchup zone during this game.
Cornell vs. Missouri
Mizzou, and it won't be close-I'm thinking by 20. They just have the athletes.
Dayton vs. West Virginia
I'm thinking Dayton will put up a good fight, but I like West Virginia. They have all these guys with long wingspans, and I think this tournament will give us a preview of how good they can be next year. Remember the name Kevin Ebanks.
Morehead St. vs. Louisville
I hope Morehead St. brought their oxygen tanks, because this will be a track meet. Louisville by 30 plus.
Arizona vs. Utah
Much like the Western Kentucky/Illinois tilt last night, when everyone picks the 12 seed as the 'upset' pick, is it really an upset? I just think Arizona has the chance to pull this one off, provided they show up at tipoff ready to go. Utah won't just wait for them.
USC vs. Boston College
BC is another fickle squad. You have no idea what you could be getting. But I know what you get with a healthy USC team-defense. Plain and simple, it's what they do every game. I'll hang my hat on that.
Portland St. vs. Xavier
I'm picking Xavier, but they need to be ready. Portland St. made the tourney last year as well, and they know what to expect running out of the tunnel.
Siena vs. Ohio State
I like Siena, I know some people will tell you it's a trap. But I just haven't seen a whole bunch of consistency out of The Ohio State University. I think Siena will run, and run well, to a 10 point win.
Cleveland St. vs. Wake Forest
Wake Forest should run Cleveland St. off the floor, but they won't. Wake will win, but it won't be a pretty site.
Robert Morris vs. Michigan St.
MSU should win this game, but there are little things to watch out for in this game. Can the Spartans find someone, anyone, to hit a jumper? Because that brand of rugby they play will eventually cost them dearly if they think it will work. Robert Morris will not be an easy foe, but I'm pretty sure after watching Memphis barely pull out a win yesterday, Coach Tom Izzo will have the guys ready to go.
Wisconsin vs. Florida St.
I hope that the 'Noles wipe Wisconsin off the floor in the 1st half. I don't think the Badgers deserve to be here. Of course, the last time I said that....
Enjoy your Friday, I've got resumes to send out and I get to go to a friends house to get instructions...I'm house-sitting for a few days next week, and there's a puppy, too!
Lastly, a huge congrats goes out to my friends Jen and Jay, they had their first child yesterday morning, a little guy named Aiden Robert. All are healthy, and what more can you ask for, really? Nothing, that's what.

My Picks for today
Alrighty, we're about an hour away from tip-off today, so here's my picks for today's games:
Cal State Northridge vs. Memphis
Come on, CSN celebrated their invite at a BW3's...Memphis, by 20 (at least). Enjoy Tyreke Evans, as I don't think he'll be back in college next year...he looks damn near 30, too!
Radford vs. North Carolina
This game will be close for 5 minutes. Then, UNC will turn it on even without Ty Lawson. However, that doesn't mean UNC walks into the Sweet 16. Keep checking info on Lawson's toe.
Binghamton vs. Duke
It'll be closer than you think, but Duke wins, but by less than 10. Binghamton has a ton of transfers from other D1 schools, so they won't be afraid of a major conference powerhouse.
Chattanooga vs. UConn
UConn, in a woodshed game, they have way too much talent.
Morgan St vs. Oklahoma
Revel in the fun that you get to have watching Blake Griffin...and then tell me if OU runs any offensive sets, it doesn't seem to me that they do. That'll hurt later on. But Griffin is a ridiculous athlete...6'10" shouldn't be able to do what he can do on a court.
Akron vs. Gonzaga
Please, Gonzaga should have this wrapped up about 5 minutes into the 2nd half.
American University vs. Villanova
I can only hope that the big white stiff on American talks smack to Donte Cunningham--one will end up crying, the other laughing. Oh, and Villanova is at home in Philly, place your bets now.
Mississippi State vs. Washington
I'm a huge believer in momentum, and Miss. St. has it. I'm not overly impressed with Washington, maybe that's because I watched their last Pac 10 tourney game, and thought they kind of whined a lot and did things to get the other team out of their game instead of playing their own game. Upset time, with a 13 seed taking care of a 4 seed.
VCU vs. UCLA
Upset #2!! Eric Maynor will become a household name after dropping 25 tonight. Great player.
Northern Iowa vs. Purdue
Purdue is sneaky good in this tournament. They are finally healthy and play good defense and have matchup issues on offense. Purdue by 12.
Butler vs. LSU
Butler, and I don't think it will be close. LSU is impatient, Butler has a bunch of patient players. This will lead to LSU trying to quicken the pace, and they aren't strong enough yet to do that without turning the ball over and being out of position on long rebounds-leading to easy hoops for Butler. Besides, Butler's home gym is where they filmed 'Hoosiers', I'm just sayin'.
Michigan vs. Clemson
I don't even think that Michigan should be in this tournament. So I'm hoping that the Clemson team that I watched blow up Duke a couple months ago shows up and wipes the Wolverines off the court. Clemson vs. Oklahoma in the second round would be a real fun game to watch.
Texas A&M vs. BYU
I'm just taking BYU on a hunch. I've seen A&M play 3 times and they've never impressed me.
Maryland vs. California
California, just because they have the better athletes. Maryland made a heck of a run, but they don't have anyone over 6'7" in their rotation.
Minnesota vs. Texas
Texas has no point guard to speak of. And Gophers coach Tubby Smith somehow manages to get another team into the tourney. How's that taste, Kentucky fans, lil' bitter? I told you, the guy can coach, plain and simple. Just wait 2 more seasons, Gophers-you'll be an elite 8 team.
Western Kentucky vs. Illinois
Upset-and no one will be surprised. Illinois has played some ugly games this season, and they will be without their PG...thanks for playing, enjoy the complimentary t-shirt, but you're going back to Champaign tomorrow.
I'll have some results tomorrow, reviewing the games for tomorrow, and maybe even some pro football stuff.
Happy Thursday!
Cal State Northridge vs. Memphis
Come on, CSN celebrated their invite at a BW3's...Memphis, by 20 (at least). Enjoy Tyreke Evans, as I don't think he'll be back in college next year...he looks damn near 30, too!

My Reactions to Selection Sunday
Alright, really quick before I go out and get my drinking on. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all-now be smart and get a cab or ride a bus or a train today and tonight, no point in getting a DUI or harming someone else or yourself!!
My reactions were written down on a notebook as the selection show was going on, here they are in the raw form, by region---
Midwest Region
Louisville with the overall #1 seed-Wow. I wasn't all that impressed.
The 4th #1 seed is UConn, I'd like to know why not Memphis?
Anyone want to explain to me why a craphole like Detroit gets the Final Four? That place is a dump!
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo politicking for a #1 seed before getting trounced in the Big 10 semis was a bit much for me. And then hearing other coaches in the Big 10 that said 'we beat a potential 1 seed' just made me want to hurl. Come on guys, you're better than that, aren't you?
OSU is an 8 seed?
Arizona made the tourney-this is what happens when your schedule is solid, period.
Boston College, a 7 seed??? They lost to Harvard!
North Dakota St. as a 14 seed in Minneapolis-isn't this like a home game for them?
Dayton getting an at large bid to face West Virginia, this could be a fun game.
West Region
BYU vs Texas A&M-the 8/9 game....did I miss something?
Washington vs Mississippi State-good game, but in Portland, buh-bye Miss. State
Purdue as a 5 seed makes sense
Is Cal State Northridge at a Buffalo Wild Wings to celebrate their invitation to the dance?
Maryland is a 10 seed-hello bubble
East Region
Oklahoma State as a 8 seed- I think their Big 12 tourney run helped
Wisconsin as a 12-crap, Wisco is an absolute crap team this year
Binghamton will be giving Duke some trouble in the opening round
Texas vs Minnesota-yuck, I've seen both of these teams play-cover your eyes, it won't be pretty
Villanova somehow manages to get to be in Philly for the 1st and 2nd rounds-way to stay home
South Region
LSU is an 8 seed-as a regular season conference champ, the SEC is down this year, big time
Illinois is a 5 seed-put all my money on Western Kentucky, please
the potential for a Clemson/OU 2nd round game could be really good to watch
My boys as a 3 seed-now get some rest, I know you're exhausted from all the OT's!!
ASU and Temple will be a fun game.
Penn St. and St. Marys are out. PSU had a horrid out of conference strength of schedule. St. Mary's just was unlucky with Patty Mills being hurt. I think they would have beaten out Gonzaga had he not gotten hurt in the WCC.
And how the hell does the Big 10 get the same number of bids as the ACC and the Big East?? I hate Big 10 hoops, it's like watching a rugby scrum for 40 minutes, nothing good about watching those games.
Tomorrow-I break the games down!
Oh, and on a personal note, today will be good and bad. Good because I get to drink when it's 70 outside, bad/sad because I won't be getting my drunken singing from someone awesome later tonight...maybe I'll have to pick up the slack.

Oh, and on a personal note, today will be good and bad. Good because I get to drink when it's 70 outside, bad/sad because I won't be getting my drunken singing from someone awesome later tonight...maybe I'll have to pick up the slack.

Number 100-and why honesty is the only policy
Alrighty my lil' cherubs, it's been about a month since I've written anything, so you're being forewarned that this is a bit of a long one, as there is a ton to talk about. Hopefully you're either smart enough to print this out, surf & squat, or have an iPhone/Crackberry to read this on a bus/train/hovercraft.
So I'm going to lead off with sports on this one, and for my 1 and 1/2 hockey fans out there, this is for you: Sidney Crosby is overrated. Yes, he's very good, and I love that he's the 'face' of hockey, but something doesn't sit right with me. It's that he's kind of a bitch. There are plenty of instances this year showing off his ability for douchery. He's started a couple of skirmishes and skated out of the way while others fight. And then there was the donkey-punch...on someone's scrotum. When did it become okay to hit someone from behind, like ever? I'll come out and say it-it never has, not in life, and not in sports, and definitely not in hockey. So to me, he might be a top 5 player, but he's not even the best player on his own team. I'm certain he gets picked on, and sometimes it gets chippy, but you don't punch a guy in the twig and giggleberries from behind.
It's the same reason I will never be a huge fan of Chris Paul in basketball. He punched Julius Hodge in the nuts during a game years ago while at Wake Forest, and no matter how good he gets or how many people say how nice he or his game is, I can't let that gigantic transgression go. It's a bitch move, one that while maybe could be forgiven, won't be forgotten-at least not by me.
More sports-Hey Geno Hayes, you have some 'splainin to do. 1st, next time your girl asks you if the jeans make her butt look big, the answer is no! It's always no!! 2nd and more importantly...what the hell are you doing dating a 19 year old girl? You can do lots of things with them, but dating them is a bad idea-they are especially unstable-don't the Bucs have any veterans to teach this young buck anything?
I was asked the other night if I was watching the World Baseball Classic-and the answer is no. My reasoning is so simple. Let me just state that while Bud Selig has done one thing right in his tenure as commissioner of baseball (the wildcard), he has flubbed up mostly everything else he touches. Case in point, the WBC. It's his idea. And yet he does it at the beginning of the season, when guys are trying to get into shape for the season. Look, I know everyone trains practically year-round now, but come on. 2007 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia is already hurt with a strained rib cage muscle. Hopefully it's not serious, but that seems like the type of injury that could, oh I don't know, linger or even come back. Why couldn't he take a page from the NHL? I distinctly remember that halfway thru one season they stopped for like 2 weeks for the World Cup...heck I think they do that for the Olympics, too. Bud, why not do that instead of the All-Star game every 3-4 years??
More baseball-Mark McGwire is apparently teaching some folks to hit....really? Why does anyone want to learn hitting from a career .263 hitter? And what do they want to learn? How to juice-look like a nitwit in front of Congress? Maybe how to fade away after resurrecting a sport with a fellow cheater, like McGwire and Sosa back in 1998? I'm just sayin'.
This Lane Kiffin mess with the Raiders is getting weirder and weirder by the day. I really hope Al Davis shows up to court in one of his jumpsuits, it would be the fashion event of the year-so far.
Way to go ESPN. I love this one. So Donte Stallworth hits and kills a man with his car down in Miami. What the hell does the last paragraph have anything to do with this? Look at Stallworth's career, he's only spent one year with New England, and that was 2 seasons ago. He is currently a Brown from Cleveland, and spent 4 years in New Orleans-his original team. New England wasn't even his best statistical season, so why tie a potential murderer to the Pats?? I'm just sayin', again.
Good luck, city of Buffalo, you're going to need it. That nutbag TO is now a Bill, and my favorite part of this so far is the one person I know that's a Bills fan telling me, "I don't know whether to laugh or cry." Congrats Bills fans, you're in for one hell of a ride. I hope QB Trent Edwards has some type of deal with Mylanta, he's going to need it. Better yet, a noise-canceling headset company might make more sense.
Lastly on the sports stuff, my boys at Syracuse put up a good effort last night, in the first half. I firmly believe that fatigue set in going into the 2nd half last night. You play 7 OT's in 2 nights, which is almost an extra game, and see if you aren't a wee bit tired. Don't get me wrong, Louisville is a damn good team, but I have been watching this 'Cuse squad all year, and while their eyes were stating one thing, their bodies couldn't fire on all the pistons. I knew they were in trouble when jump shots were falling short halfway thru the first half. No excuses, and hopefully in a about an hour they get at least a 5 seed in the tourney.
Now, onto news and opinions, and I lead with some bad news. Not tragic, because I'm a believer that that word is completely overused. Tragic, overrated, underrated and gameplan can all stop being overused for awhile, and we'll be just fine.
This news is about another former wrestler that has died. At 33, Andrew 'Test' Martin was found Friday deceased by neighbors. Why isn't there a congressional council on this stuff? That's got to be like 30 dead wrestlers in the last decade, all before they turn 45. Isn't that a bit much for anyone else?? Look, I'm well aware that it's 'fake', so get off that tangent right now. It's entertainment. It's also a part of my childhood, and some fun memories, too. Google dead wrestlers and you'll be shocked. All I'm saying is that if this were happening to so-called stars in Hollyweird, there would be more crap on TMZ and the news than crap about the economy.
Ward Churchill is suing Colorado University, because he thinks he was unjustly fired. He thinks it was because he called the victims of 9/11 little Eichmanns. And the President at the time had the chance to say why it really was, and now she's a victim, too. Hey douchenozzle, way to set the female movement back a couple of decades. Apparently Betsy Hoffman felt pressured by Republicans in this fine state. Oh, there were no Democrats telling you to get this clown out of the university system? Come on, folks, there has to be one of you out there that voted for Obama and thinks this guy isn't an Indian, too! Once again, it's all Republicans fault. When the heck does someone stand up and take accountability around here??
Now, what should she have done? Easy, lay out the reasons for his dismissal as easy as this-1)he is not a protected class, nor has he ever proven he is of Indian descent. Just because someone says that they are something doesn't make it so. 2)his research is faulty, 3)he plagarised someone else's art and works and then tried to pass them off as his own. 4)Lastly, he assaulted a 9news camera operator. Why the hell should he be anywhere near the privilege to teach impressionable minds? This is why I stated above she set the female movement back. You cannot be a part-time feminist. You just can't. Either try and be equal in this form with guys and stand up for yourself (which actually has female tones to it, too-ever see a mother protect its children) and give factual reasons for why this assclown no longer has a job, but don't be a complete wuss and blame the pressure laid onto you by the former Governor. Stand up and say, "hells yes I got rid of him, thru proper channels, because he was not an honest representation of what we believe the academic reputation of this university to be." How hard is that? I just came up with that off the top of my head. Well, in Betsy's defense, she only was in charge during this and that lovely football 'scandal'. Proving the point that it's not all woman that are victims, but this one sure did seem to play the card awfully fast. I happen to know of a few women who'd like to take this one out for a cup of coffee or a beer and tell her what's what.
Did anyone catch The Daily Show the other day? Holy crap did Jon Steward take Jim Cramer from CNBC to school. One was playing checkers and the other was playing chess. I'll be honest with you, I rarely watch this show. But I understand it's appeal. And if I remember correctly, more people in the coveted 18-24 age bracket told a study that they got their political news from this show like 4 to 1 over the mainstream media in the 2004 election. Look, sometimes Jon Stewart is a bit too liberal for me, but he has his moments of balance. I cannot say the same for MSNBC. However, on this financial topic, I think Stewart was spot on. I just hope he can see it thru the eyes of this last presidential election. All I could think about while watching this interview was Frost/Nixon. Funny thing, though, was that movie had a little bit of Hollyweird make believe in it. I watched this one-no one is that good of a script writer. Well done, Mr. Stewart, I applaud you for calling someone out in front of them, not waiting for them to leave, or never inviting them on your show.
Just in case you were wondering where you'll be the most free in the US, here's a little list for you. Hmmmm, go figure, I could've told you that Massachusetts, California, New York and Illinois would be in the bottom 10, and wouldn't you know it! Wonder if that's why businesses are leaving in droves. Funny thing, NH is the only state in New England out of the bottom 11, go figure. Damn hippies ruin everything. Oh, NH's state motto in case you forgot is "Live Free or Die". I love that they only give you 2 options.
A couple of goofy observations before I get back to being serious-really:
1)anyone else ever change the color of the pen they're used to writing with, and it totally messes you up? Fine, me neither.
2)My boy up in Toronto has a very cute little girl who just turned 3. Where the hell does the time go? And now she won't say hi to me on the phone, but she will say "NO!". Funny, like every other girl I meet-you figure out the irony, I need a drink.
3)the more you talk about the abscence of something, the more it becomes a topic of discussion.
4)I'm tired of the 'gotcha' interview style that seems to be the new standard. Can't anyone be allowed to change their mind anymore? I'm pretty sure that some of the things we all thought when we were teenagers or in our early 20's have been proven otherwise. Can you imagine if you never learned anything after you were 22-good grief, we'd be dumb enough to be politicians.
5)go see live music, download music, share it, I don't care. Everyone has their own soundtrack, mine happens to be getting a tune up right about now.
6)when the hell did guys start wearing girls jeans? And how can that be comfy on your junk, really? I love that I'm 33 and wear my stuff a little loose...not hip-hop loose, calm down. You only gets to see these here drawers if you ask politely (being of loose morals and slightly inebriated is neither here nor there).
7)I only asked the question on #6 because I was on the train the other day and saw a guy and girl couple and she definitely was the 'guy' in the mix. He was worried about his hair, what his style was looking like....I can't stand male bitches, makes me sad.
8)and that, right there, is why I can still dream about opening up my male finishing school-think the cool of Bogart, Dean and Sinatra meeting with the awesomeness of Norris and Eastwood, throw in some grilling skills, changing a tire and the knowledge that you never order anything with fruit in it unless you're south of Texas, and you get a decent idea.
Now, onto more serious matters. Anyone else hear about this 'Sexting' epidemic that's out there? It's borderline hysterical to me. What's criminal is the thing that certain politicians and lawmakers are attempting to do. Lets just put it out there that kids today have more technology at their disposal than we could have ever dreamed of. Can we agree on that? If so, the rest of what I have to say about this makes a whole bunch more sense. First, lets not kid ourselves by thinking this is the first time in the history of humans that teenagers are horny and obnoxious. That being stated, teenagers have always wanted to hump anything and everything. It's called nature. I will say that the amount of sex that is out there is a bit much, and I'm not that far removed from being a teenager-especially maturity-wise. But these kids have more 'freedom' than we ever thought of having, mostly because we have parents who want to be their kids friends instead of a parent. Being a parent doesn't mean you get to win the day-to-day popularity contest, at least in my estimation. I wasn't particularly fond of my old man as a teenager, but started to get things once I got to be about 20. And now that he's gone, I kind of wish some things went different. But I digress. You've got kids who are just as horny as the we were when we were there age. But they have cell phones with cameras, and damn good cameras, too. They have their own MacBook Pros, and other laptops with webcams mounted in them. We never had this. I guarantee you that if I did, I certainly would've been bugging my girlfriend for a striptease over the internet. Of course, I was fortunate to go to high school and college in a time where flannel and baggy sweaters were the fashion of choice. I know, lucky me. So what does this all mean? It means that if I were in high school right now with a bunch of girls who wear super miniskirts and thong underwear that peeks out from the top of their jeans, I can just about bet you that I would be lucky to get into community college rather than the fine institution I attended. Here's the other thing-since we've been cramming sex down these kids throats (pun intended), girls are more promiscuous. Don't believe me? Remember high school? My high school's graduating class started off with about 1200 students. I bet you if I went thru my yearbook right now I'd be lucky to rattle off 15 girls that were considered easy. Now? Please! There are teenagers having BJ parties. So while I'm definitely jealous, I'm also extremely concerned for anyone under the age of 17 right now. Sex with teachers is one thing, but here's what I'd like to know....what happens to these girls, and how a guy judges his mates, in say, another 10 years? I know for a fact that there are women and men out there with far more varied and exciting sex lives that I'll ever have. And good for them. I'll take my experiences and just say that I've enjoyed all of them. But what's left for a girl who's done half the football team and had it videotaped at age 18? Orgies at 21? Swinging at 23? Sex addicts meeting at 25? I'm not mocking anyone, I'm geniunely asking the question. Living with multiple partners? I don't know. And you know what? I don't want to know. I'm going to be fine living my little 'mundane' sexual life-yes, it's been judged that way by some, in which I giggle out loud. I've made my choices, and can be perfectly fine with them. Of course we'd all love to be having sex. But here's the kicker-take away the sex and maybe the money-what's left of your mate? My opinion, for whatever its worth, is that nookie is way better if you actually give a damn about your partner.
So what does this have to do with 'Sexting'? Simple-these kids have access that you and I never had. And if we did, we'd probably be doing stupid things, too. Honestly, why any woman would want a picture of a love pickle, I'll never know. Here's the problem-we have politicians wanting to arrest and prosecute those kids who receive a nekkid picture of someone else. You can't know what someone will send you!! My friends send me all sorts of joke text messages, can we prosecute them for wasting memory on my cell phone bill? And then, these same lawmakers want the recipient to have to register as a sex offender. Sorry, but a 16 year old kid who gets a picture of his 15 year old girlfriend's 'giner is not the same as the creepy neighbor who drives a volvo, always has ice cream and is really into pokemon. They aren't even remotely close. And why should the kid have to have that scarlet letter around his neck for being a recipient? Some folks need to just hold themselves accountable-I know, God forbid. Stupid society-everything is apparently someone else's fault. If that's the case, I should sue the State to get my aspirin for free....dolts.
So I had a contracting gig this past week, and it should last at least a few hours tomorrow. I will not be working on Tuesday. It's an Irish holiday, and I plan on damaging some brain cells. Besides, it's my first holiday without Pops, so I'll do as I damn well please, thank you very much. The contracting gig is relatively easy, data scrubbing spreadsheets. The problem is the guy I'm working for. Ever work for someone who tells you to do something, and then gives someone else the same thing to do with different instructions? What happens? You end up with apples and oranges--and then wondering why you can't compare the two. In turn, making more work. No problem for me, I'll take the money. But it is frustrating when someone asks you why something isn't done, and it's 99.9% on them. And I wonder why my career hasn't taken off...sheesh.
So my job hunt this past week was very slow, almost non-existent. And when I get to the next topic, you'll get a clearer picture of why. There are a few potentially cool things out there, but some things needed to be sorted out before I could move forward.
I've been so confused the last few weeks, it's been a pain in the ass. And then I go and get frustrated about the confusion, making me tired. This dear friends is the definition of the vicious circle. I was supposed to get on a plane on 3/5 to go hang out with this girl and take care of some interviews. Not necessarily in that order. Funny thing happened on the way to pack my bags-my interviews dried up, and the girl got sick. So I made the executive decision to bail on the trip. Honestly, my Mom and brother understood-and since they've seen plenty of me in the last couple of months, I knew they'd be a little disappointed, but again, they understood. I had two main objectives for going out there, and both were a wash, so why get on the plane? To top it all off, my brother got a job and was working, and I told Ma not to move around her schedule, as I thought I'd be busy interviewing and knew that I'd have some time on the end of the trip, so we'd be all set. What was I going to do, have a staring contest all week long with the cat? Hells no. The best part about me not getting on a plane was that in the matter of 24 hours, I managed to get an interview-that was later canceled to the job req. getting pulled, this contract gig, and maybe an opportunity out in Las Vegas.
Now the thing is Vegas is at about .02% for me. For numerous reasons. Most importantly, I'm not all that excited about it. It doesn't excite me. It makes me nauseous. It's like the hamster chasing the thing on the side of the wheel. It's probably not going to deliver. In any way shape or form. I'd be farther away from all the things I'd really like to accomplish, and I'd be farther away from my friends and family, literally. Now, if this thing offers the chance to do certain things along with a small financial windfall, then I'm listening.
The main thing that needed to be sorted out for me was the girl. When you have as much free time as I've had in the last 2 months, your mind tends to wander, and to get twisted. Look, my Pops passed away in the beginning of November, I got laid off 2 months later, and I've always thought about moving back east. And if you got one crazy notion that the stars were aligning a certain way, well-let's just reiterate that my mind tends to wander. And then something clicks in your brain, maybe it's a voice, maybe your conscience, maybe it's something you read, I don't know. But I made the decision to ask for the conversation. And I saw my tattoo-the one that reads 'To thine own self be true'. And then I remembered one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my Pops-we were drinking heavily one night and were mocking those people who meander thru life asking everyone else's opinion, and how sad it must be. And it's why I'm back to relative normality right now as I type this. I was becoming this last person, and I hate that person. So in asking for this conversation with this girl, I was prepped for certain things, like a yes or a no. I wasn't expecting the answer I got, but glad I still got an answer-and an honest one at that. (Hence the title of this blog).
I was hoping to have this conversation face to face, but it just didn't work out that way. My reason for wanting it face to face is simple-eyes don't lie. I know I say that I'm the worlds worst poker player, but in all honesty, I'm not all that bad. I'm horrible stone sober or drunk. But 2-3 cocktails in me, and I'm rather good. Now that's just with cards. People I'm way better with. Well, not girls that I like, but whatever. I had to let it be known, put it out there in the universe, to let her know, that I like her. I was a bit petrified, because I know that there are some out there that have pledged their love to this woman, and probably with some good reason, too. I can't think of a good reason, but I'm sure that they had 'em. Could be fear. But I don't have that, not in that sense. Mine is a fear of hate. Hate of asking the question 'What if?' I hate that question, and don't want to ever really have to ask that of myself. I've also been the person that tends to take things head on. Sometimes that bites you in the ass, sometimes it works. At the very least, you can appreciate the honest nature of it. So she now knows how I feel-I like her. And when asked if she shared the same feelings, I got 'I don't know'...sonofabitch-that I wasn't prepped for. But I understand, and truly am not upset, mad, bitter, flabbergasted or anything. Her reasoning is sound, and she's engrossed in moving to a place that is all new to her on about 3 different levels. Hell, I'm from there, so it's nothing to me. It would be nothing for me to move back, either. All my boys there would do is ask if I want to catch for the softball team and move down a barstool. It's truly that simple.
She's also staring at this new job, and all these new things, new place. She's the only female who has her job, and there's only like 30 people in the world that do her job. Pressure? Maybe, I didn't get to ask her. I know she's got all these walls up, and while I wish I didn't get that, I really really do. I got the impression that she's just not into that whole concept right now. How did I get that impression?-She told me. There were some other niceties and compliments exchanged, but it boils down to this-I have to do what's best for me. And if she was the main reason I was considering moving, which she isn't, then I doubt I'd still be facebook friends with her. That would've freaked me out, too. How could it not
Andnow I get to deal with something that is a very novel concept to me. I'm used to looking out for others in my life. In this instance, it would've been my Mom and my brother. Instead, they're all good and don't necessarily need me-they'd love to have me back home, but I'm not a requirement. So now I have to do stuff for myself, be a little bit selfish. But I did have to assure her that she wouldn't be the reason I'd be moving east. She wouldn't. She'd be a hell of a bonus, I can say that much. Sorry, but y'all don't get to know every little detail of what was said, or what, if any, other topics were brought up. I'm glad we had that talk, I hope I didn't tire her brain with it, because it was serious to me-and needed to happen. Since then, my mind has slowed down considerably, and I'm starting to think a whole lot more about what I want, as opposed to what some others might want of me. Sorry, but sometimes that's just what needs to happen.
It boils down to this, whatever the best opportunity for me is, be it in Boston or Denver, is where I'm going to end up. Vegas and all those other cities are on the far outskirts for me.
Happy Sunday to you, and look for my college hoops breakdown, tourney-style, tomorrow night.
So I'm going to lead off with sports on this one, and for my 1 and 1/2 hockey fans out there, this is for you: Sidney Crosby is overrated.

How does it unfold?
I honestly have no clue. That's the God's to honest truth. I have no inclination on how the story goes. It's not like I have any idea, clue, or expectation on how the rest of the story gets told, as it hasn't unfolded in front of me, or us, quite yet. I usually have some type of premonition before things happen, sometimes up to 2 months ahead of time.
This time? I've got nothing!! I'm on a plane in like 4 days to go back home. I have some interviews lined up, my ride from the airport is taken care of, but I have no clue what I'm doing.
Where is my future? Is it Denver? Boston? Chicago? San Jose? How about Vegas? And what will I be doing? If anyone has a clue-please-feel free to let me know. I haven't been this confused in years. And the best part, if you want good news on this, is that it has nothing to do with anything else other than me.
What has me so confused is that I used to be able to consult my compass, at all sorts of weird hours. My Dad would always answer the phone, listen, and calm me down. My Mom tries to do a good job, but she's always Mom, making me feel better and telling me everything will be okay. How does she know that? The main difference between my Mom and Dad in this type of scenario is easy....Mom says it, Dad just made me feel it. I know that in the long run whatever is meant to happen will happen, and it will be my choice, but the anticipation and lack of decisiveness is making me very uneasy.
The best part about all of this is that my boy, my baby brother, truly has become a friend. I never thought it would happen. We're so similar and so different, I swear sometimes we're each others ying to the yang. It's awesome and frustrating, because if we're both in a pissy mood, yikes. I called him up and he was in a great mood and totally made me feel better.
And we've both learned something in the last couple of months that wasn't relayed all that well to us when we were kids-It's not about the destination, it's about the ride that got you there.
Buckle up, it's about to get a little bit bumpy, but I'm going to have some fun along the way!
