So I had a pretty good weekend, ended up going to a foofy party and met some people. Even got to go to a pro lacrosse game before that, had some beer with friends and showed up to said party a little toasty. Now, I can live with going to a party that's beyond a bit pretentious, hey, it happens. What I can't tolerate is what happened the next morning.
I have to backtrack a bit. I have a friend who called me up a few days before Sunday to see if I'd play basketball....Yeah, right. I'm out of shape, haven't played in 2 years, have the lungs of a 50 year old who smokes a pack a day, and am without health insurance. Sounds like a brilliant idea, now doesn't it? I've already blown out one knee, let's see if we can take care of the other one right before the Super Bowl!!! Look, I was never planning on playing, and here's why:
This person who called me on Thursday to set up plans to play hoops also called me on Friday night to tell me the real reason she wanted to play--her life is in shambles. Husband cheating, she's living an immoral life (her terms, not mine, I don't talk like that) and she just wanted to lean on a friend. Apparently, I'm that friend for her. So be it. I listened for over an hour, and made plans for Sunday to do something, but nothing that was even remotely athletic. Or so I thought.
So when I called her Sunday later in the morning, much to my dismay she answered with a "we're playing at 2". I told her I wasn't in any shape to play, as I was busy from the evening before. And since a gentleman doesn't share his stories, I can say I was tired and in no mood to play ball, along with what was stated above. You want to know what kind of response I got? And how I came up with the title for this post?
"Well, I guess I know who my friends are." Are you crappin' me????? Who says shit like this? My only response to this nonsense was something along the lines of if that is how you talk to your friends, be prepared to have one less.
And that ranks right now as my dumbest conversation of 2008.

Championship Game Reviews
I'm going to work backwards on this one...
NY Giants @ Green Bay-okay, who else thought on Byun Yung Kim when Lawrence Tynes came out to kick the game-winning FG in OT? Maybe I was the only one. I'm not going to be like those I've heard on TV who only gush over another Manning and let Brett Favre off the hook. "The Giants of New York triumphed over the Packers of Green Bay by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin thru a giant 'H'...it was a most ripping victory"-bonus points if you can name where that quote came from.
Eli Manning was fantastic, as were his receivers. Plaxico Burress ought to be arrested for the abuse he leveled on corner Al Harris. The old guy, Amani Toomer, still has plenty left in the tank, making clutch catches. And the Giants O-Line deserves a bunch of credit for giving Eli plenty of time. I'll get to their D in a minute, but OC Kevin Gilbride deserves some props for the excellent play calling. I'll say it, the Giants have played the best of any team I've seen in the playoffs. In all 3 facets, they've been the best.
The Giants D got a rush on Favre with mostly just their front 4, and won with backup corners. My favorite thing about this game is the discussion on the weather. They both had to play in it, so enough of that already.
As for the Packers, in my estimation, they blew it, time and time again. Favre played awful, and he pretty much played this way only one other time this season, the game @ Dallas. Old Gunslinger Favre came out and turned the ball over and made some horrid decisions. None more worse than his pick in OT, especially when replays show 2 other players in that line of sight open. The Packers only ran the ball 6 times in the 2nd half. I could tell Ryan Grant wasn't getting any room to run, but you still have to run the ball in order to keep a defense honest. I question the play calling, but on both sides of the ball. As for the Pack D, apparently they chose not to make a single adjustment all game. Eli Manning can be as accurate as any other QB in the league if given all day to pick apart a defense. As it is with all Manning's, pressure up the middle is the key to getting to him, to allow him to make mistakes. I never saw GB blitz. Or lay off the press coverage of Plaxico Burress. The guy is 7 inches taller than the CB playing him, might want to back off a little bit.
The Packers had chances, didn't take advantage of them, and now a Manning is in the Super Bowl. No one to blame but themselves. And the Giants won this game, just to be certain.
San Diego @ New England-I don't like anyone on the Chargers, but like Wes Mantooth, I do respect the hell out of a few of them. As much as I can't stand him, a big hand for Philip Rivers, who was gimpy and we all just found out today that had a little cartilage cleanup procedure last Monday so he could play on Sunday...and will now have to have his ACL replaced. As someone that's had that procedure done, I'm more than impressed. Now, LT2 can zip it for as long as he plays. Emmitt Smith played a game with one shoulder. LT2 had a knee sprain. Well, if his QB didn't have a ligament, what the hell? The trainers said he couldn't go? Since when did they matter in a game of this magnitude?
And now I get to hear and read the excuses-No LT2, our QB was hurt, Gates was less than effective, the Pats are cheaters, especially Richard Seymour. Let me see if I have this straight-I've had to listen for over a year about this supposedly better team is classy and plays the game the right way and they have no excuses, but now I get to hear the excuses? Antonio Gates has stated that if he were healthy that it would've been a different game. No Shit. Any other brilliant observations, Captain Obvious? How about grass is green and water's wet? Do any of them tickle your fancy? The guy I expected to bitch the most, Rivers, stated the better team won....and here's why.
While San Diego played well and moved the chains, they kept going for 3 when the Pats were getting 7s. Thank goodness I have an accounting degree, that way I can tell you that it will take you a lot longer to win a game when you're kicking FGs instead of scoring TDs. Oh, Tom Brady played like crap, his worst game of the year by far, but if you don't capitalize on turnovers, it will cost you in the end.
Now, my gameball(s) go to Junior Seau, for making plays the day after his 39th birthday, Kevin Faulk for being himself (the Pats have an abundance of 'those guys'), Laurence Maroney for finally being patient enough on the backside pressure to press the hole and cutback. I was begging for it all 1st quarter, and when it happens, it's friggin beautiful. The O-Line needs some steak dinners or monster trucks bought for them, they were great, as they've been all year.
February 3rd can't get here soon enough.

Conference Championship Predictions
So I'm a day late--and about a dollar short. Oh well, better late than never. Here are my predictions for tomorrow's games:
NY Giants @ Green Bay-Do you really trust Eli Manning? Do you think that the Giants can get enough pressure on Brett Favre to negate the fact that the Giants could be starting their #3 and 4 corners? Me, neither. I know the Giants have won 9 on the road, and they are playing very good football. But they don't pass my eyeball test. I've been impressed by their two wins over Tampa Bay and Dallas, but I just don't see the Giants going into Green Bay and beating the Packers. Green Bay is just the more solid team, and they've got that Favre guy. Him, he's pretty good. The other thing to be reminded of is that it is currently rumored to be 4 degrees at game time. Yelling out "BURRRRRR" would be the definition of understatement. I know that the Giants will bring some pressure from their front four, but it won't be enough to effect Favre into the turnovers they'll need to win the game. I'm thinking Packers 33-17.
San Diego @ New England-Game time temperature is stated to be 10. San Diego averages around 70-80 all day, everyday. Yes, beating Indianopolis was nice, but it was in a dome. There are also reports that Chargers QB (or loudmouth) Philip Rivers has a partially torn ACL. So I'm thinking we will be seeing quite a bit of Billy Volek. LT2 is hurt, as is Antonio Gates. And Igor Olshanskey was yapping while walking off the field in Indy. Cris Carter on Inside NFL stated it, and if you don't have HBO or missed the show, it bears repeating-"San Diego is too immature to win this game." I concur. I've spoken to some that think San Diego will give New England a game, that they are a different team than the team that got spanked in Week 2. I disagree. I'm done with listening to people tell me that the Chargers are classy. They are a bunch of punks who are on the verge of a savage beating...Pats win, easy 42-10. And I wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't even that close.
Enjoy the fun on Sunday!

Ti-yahd
so this blog is going to cover all the bases today. I'm exhausted for thinking too damn much, be it about sports, family, friends or my ever-extending job search.
First a note to my friends-I truly do appreciate all of your support and faith in me. It's people like you that can deliver a pick-me-up that I've kind of needed lately. And for that, you are to be commended. A true friend can be there when things aren't going so great.
Now, onto the sports! Review time, boys and girls:
Seattle @ Green Bay-I think they secretly replaced Ryan Grant's hands with Folgers in the 1st two possessions for the Packers, because after he went back to his original hands, it was all over for the Seahags...Green Bay spotted them a 14-0 lead and all they scored the rest of the way was 6 pts. GB managed to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides. And Seattle allowed themselves to get man-handled. I thought that their win over Washington was a bit overrated, and this just proved it even more to me. Brett Favre was rarely pressured and picked apart Seattle's secondary, in a blizzard no less. And Ryan Grant ran for 201 yards, as opposed to his counterpart, Shaun Alexander. I think he's done as a player in the NFL, man, what a waste. He got his contract and hit 30, he didn't even bother to go downhill, he just dropped like a lead weight.
Jacksonville @ New England-You all saw it, and it was an awesome display by every guy's new man-crush, Tom Brady. 26 for 28...and those 2 incompletions were drops. Randy Moss only caught one ball. And New England still scored 31 points. Their running game was just fine against one of the best run D's in the league. Maroney finished with 122 yards. The defense did enough to allow David Garrard make a few mistakes. You can't fumble or throw picks against this team, they make you pay, and not with field goals, but with TDs. I think my favorite part of this game was afterwards, when Jags safety Reggie Nelson stated he wasn't impressed with Brady because it was a "dump-down game". Uh, Reg? Lil' note for you from the Dumbass Institute-yes, they are accepting applications-if your game plan was to not give up the deep ball and bracket Randy Moss all game and let Brady hit the underneath stuff, that's just what he did. And he completed 92.9% of his passes, a new playoff record for completion percentage. You don't have to be impressed, it's okay. It's alright, I know he's not as sharp of a dresser as your QB, but damn near every guy in a 6 state area would blow him and when he's done picking apart your defense like chimps cleaning each other, he gets to go out and nail the hottest woman on the planet. Don't be impressed, the rest of us will be for you.
San Diego @ Indy-Ummm, how the hell did this happen??? Big Ups to Michael Turner and Billy Volek for winning this game and settling a debate that has been raging in sports bars across the country for a few years. Don't worry, I'll get to it, I swear. As for the game, the more I watched, the more I got the feeling that what Peyton Manning did last year, what everyone thought was the hump he had to get over, came back, like a pimple before prom. Last year he closed games out, and that's how the Colts won a Super Bowl. Apparently he borrowed the closer ability for a year and the lease was up, because he nor his teammates could help it. 2 turnovers in the red zone? How about the vaunted improved defense that was steamrolled? Think the injuries finally caught up? I do. San Diego's O-Line mauled Indy's D-line. I loved hearing the announcers say that LT2 wasn't having a great day...I'd take 4 yards a carry. And when he got hurt, Turner the burner did even better (since he's not a focus point). I'll even give a ton of credit to Philip Rivers (oh, don't worry, he's getting smacked in a second), who before he got hurt was making great reads and putting balls where only his guys could get them. And I mean this, he was playing great before his knee gave out on him. But what the heck is this guy doing talking smack to the crowd near the end of the game when he isn't the guy who closed out the game and the stadium? (In case you weren't aware, the RCA Dome is closing for a new stadium next year). Someone turn off the lights and the sound system on the way out! Back to Rivers, he talked shit to Jay Cutler on the last Monday night game of the year, and now this?? How much more do I have to hear/read about what a classy organization the Chargers are? They've got about as much class as the clothing department at a Wal-Mart.
As for the debate, here's what I've been arguing about for years, how would Brady do if he had stud receivers like Manning and vice versa? I now have my answer. While they may be similar to some, I'd take Brady every time.
NY Giants @ Dallas-Who's surprised? Not me. Dallas didn't have it all game. They had some impressive drives, but they let the Giants hang around. And while I won't cry like T.O., I cannot lay blame on Tony Romo. It's not the vacation. It could be the drops that receivers had. It could be certain receivers (ahem, Mr. Crayton, why are you ducking your head?) slowed down on routes that could've scored. I'm not sure. Or, it could be that we give credit to the Giants front four, those guys were fantastic, and had Romo running around all day for his life. Don't get me wrong, Romo does need to learn a few things, like chucking the ball out of bounds when he's on the run instead of taking an 11 yard sack. Minor detail. He should also yell at his line, because they didn't give him a whole bunch in the 2nd half. Now, I'm not stating that the Cowboys lost this game, because the Giants definitely won this game. I was beyond impressed with Eli Manning right before the end of the 1st half. And to Tom Coughlin, way to not sit on the ball with a minute to go. For me, that was Eli's grown up moment. He looks like a different QB compared to earlier this season. More command, and that could be interesting on Sunday.
Let's see what else is going on...Randy Moss slapped with a restraining order, that means nothing, I believe Randy's side. Just look at what happened to Jerome Bettis a few years ago, a very similar situation.
Joakim Noah gets suspended for a game by his own teammates-dude, this ain't Gainesville and you aren't the shit anymore. Shut your trap and play. Nothing wrong with coming off the bench and having an 8/8 career, it's worked for Kurt Thomas and PJ Brown.
Pacman Jones may have slapped a woman at a strip club that doesn't work there....WTF?? Please, I'm begging NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, do not let this man back into your league. He's clearly too damn stupid to stay away from the things that got him in most of his trouble, so he doesn't deserve the privilege of playing in the league. Let him play in the CFL, and watch what happens to him at a strip club in Montreal--the horror. "I like the food". At a nasty-ass strip club? Nothing like Hoochie-Glitter on your nachos, I guess. Look, Pacman, if you want to hook a stripper, you don't need a bunch of money to make it rain, you need drugs, or a connection to something stronger than weed. If you've got a neck tattoo, it's a major plus, too! Does this moron at least have a Momma to slap him around??
As for my job-search, it sucks the big one. I'm fed up, I'm tired of being told I don't have certain skills, with some condescending tone, as if someone is better than me. You may have more experience, but that's no reason to be a jackass about it. On top of all of that, I'm trying to get a grant from the state to pay for a certification, and it's something that could help. Instead of help, I get someone who barely speaks english (God forbid) to try and tell me how many forms to fill out, to get "some kind of information, but I'm not sure what" and to find my college diploma. Oh, no problem. I graduated 10 years ago, across the country, I don't have that lying around. I'm sure others have theirs on a wall somewhere, but I'm not them. I'm a little frustrated, mostly by the broken english and being talked to like I'm a 'tard, but this will only steel my resolve. The best story I can give you all right now is that I went to a networking event last week and had an older gentleman take a business card from me, then write down indeed.com and simplyhired.com on the back of my card and give it back to me----gee, Gramps, thanks a ton. I've only been in IT for 10+ years and am online about 9 hours a day, never heard of those. Are they related to that scary Monster(.com) I keep seeing on the telly??

No Sports, I swear
this might be considered humor, it could be dead serious. I've got a lot of free time right now, so when I'm surfing the web for news or things that might interest me, I find myself saying the following phrase out loud, to no one...WTF???
Some of these things you may have already heard about, but if not, then you heard it here first and can go find this out with a simple search in Google. I'm going to start with the sensational news first, and go to some other stuff. Honestly, if you're looking for any commentary on sports, today just ain't your day. Sorry, other things on my mind.
Britney-Commit her? Feel Bad? Take away her kids? Is she bipolar? My take is this, leave the girl alone. Not in the same way as that crying screaming tranny on YouTube, but I think my message might be similar. Leave the girl alone. And the only reason I say this is that while I know she's doing a lot of stupid things right now, how many of us were smart at 25? Any of us have our driving mishaps on tape? I can't imagine, and I don't want to imagine, where my life would end up like The Truman Show, and it would scare the crap out of me and tick me off. There are rumors she may move to Denver, and if that's the case, great (cue the sarcasm). Just what we need here in the 9 block radius of Denver's mini-downtown-craparazzi. I know Dr. Phil tried to get into her hospital room and that alone is shady, because he wanted her on his show. Does anyone do anything for someone else just 'cuz anymore? Hollyweird is the worst. I know I'm looking from the outside in, but that's just sleazy. Britney needs something that she can never have, unless she gets adopted, and that's a stable family. I know my folks might be considered nuts by some, especially if you've met them, but I can't for the life of me think that they'd let me get this out of control. Add to it that the girls 16 year old sister gets knocked up while the guy could have legally raped her while staying at the house, what is Britney supposed to do? Who can she look to for guidance? I'm telling you, this girl may have snapped, and if she hasn't, you clowns with the camera better watch it. This is a trailer park queen from Louisiana, she could be strapped the next time and just clear some of you out. And I wouldn't blame her one bit. A few months ago she ran over someone's foot...gee, could it be due to the fact that this guy was standing damn near on top of her car??? Hmm, if I see a car moving, or about to move and I'm right next to it, I tend to back up, not let that person run over my foot and then try to sell my sock on Ebay. If you're ever really bored and want to see a crappy movie that might make you squirm, rent Paparzzi. Not a great film by any means, but tell me after you watch it that you wouldn't want to do the same thing.
I laugh at those that state she's an unfit parent. Really? Okay then, how many single moms out there? How many of them are out partying on a Wednesday night? How many are 25 or younger? I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying she's not the only one. My real advice for her is to get the hell out of Hollyweird, find an respectable Aunt or family friend, and deal with her crap. It works. The only craparazzi out in Colorado is in Aspen or Vail, they won't hang out in Denver because random drive-bys happen.
Humane Execution-read those two words again....who cares if it's humane??!! Another brilliant cause by the Pansy State. Legislators earlier this week heard arguments for humane execution. Why should they get anything less than stoning. Be thankful someone is dumb enough to cleanse the area before an injection with alcohol or iodine, in case it gets infected(What?). Add this to my presidential platform, if you kill someone, that's how you get to die, maybe slower. Here's my justification-I watch CSI, like a lot of people. I like the show, and think it's cute and convenient that they can wrap up everything in 1 hour with commercials and make it feel like their investigations go only a few days. I've got a cousin that does CSI, and he's told me it's crap, some things just hang out there. Unless you're a drifter in Georgia, and could be the dumbest criminal ever.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, a 24 year old woman from Colorado was hiking in Georgia, and went missing. We all knew this wouldn't end well. I'm amazed at the info that has come out. This is about as open and shut of a case as I can remember in a long time. The initial report we had received out here in TV-land was that she died from a blow to the head. Not 12 hours later do we find out that her head was severely beaten but she also was decapitated. Nice. This drifter was found with blood in his van, but cut off the seat belt that had blood on it. Well the police have found the belt and matched it and the blood to the victim. Buh-bye drifter. Now he may be wanted in connection for killings in Florida. If he's found to have done anything in Florida, my solution for this bag of wind is public stoning, but no rocks, bricks. Bricks chucked at him by family members of those this stain of humanity caused harm to. And then maybe dust him off with a pair of old, dull, rusty garden shears. And don't go giving me this "you're no better than the criminal" crap I'm hearing about. It's bunk, and I can prove how to negate criminals.
Michigan's crime rate has dropped dramatically in the last 6 years, ever since they made it easier and legal to have a concealed weapon. Criminals don't like anyone shooting back at them, and a lot of people are nicer if they know that there's even a slight chance that someone is packing. Want more proof? I was driving around in a shady neighborhood with a buddy Saturday night, saw 2 deals go down, and he locked the doors. Racist? Nope. Bigoted? Nope. Smart? You damn right.
Teens want maternity leave-I wish I were kidding. I wish this was a joke, but oh no, it's so very real. Teens in this fine state of Colorado want maternity leave and for it not to count as absence while they are gone. Don't believe me?:

Damn good thing I don't run the show at Denver Public Schools-so your education is free, but the only thing you've managed to learn is that if you whine enough, you might get in front of state legislature? Hmm, you can go. The chances of you being a success in life and not mooching off of the government is minimal at best. What the hell is wrong with these girls? Where are their parents? Or I'd be willing to bet they come from single parents who got knocked up in high school, too. What ever happened to a good ol' fashioned BJ? Are all of these kids playing "Just the tip, just for a minute, just to see how it feels"? Don't they hand out condoms at public schools? Sorry, if I were a State Legislator I'd be explaining the rules of life to this group, and a big one is if you're willing to do what you think is right, then the rest of us reserve the right to treat you with the same rules we've all been playing by. You don't get to change the game just because you don't like the rules. I'm sure plenty of girls that were pregnant in high school managed to get their degree or GED. Not my problem. This is self-inflicted, why should I even have to concern myself with your absent record? Could it be because you skipped to school to go hook up with your boyfriend of 2 weeks that will now be your future Baby-Daddy? I know I'm generalizing, and this happens to all sorts of girls, but look at the picture on the link, and tell me you weren't thinking the same thing. I've got $5 that says she's either serving fries or working in a call center for Qwest in 2 years....any takers?
Look for me in 2012 running for President-the Accountability ticket. My motto is "If it is to be, then it is up to me." Everyone makes decisions, those decisions have consequences, and it's about time to pay the piper. I've had enough of listening people whine about their station in life while they refuse to do anything to improve it. I'm unemployed, do you hear me bitching? Nope, ask around. I'm doing just fine.

things from thin air
Uh, not much of a game last night, sorry to any OSU fans. Up 10-0, and then giving up 31 straight points...this was supposed to be a game, not a charity exhibition. Not too much stuck out of this game for me, I wasn't watching it very closely. Except this-the guy that blocked the field goal for LSU, Ricky Jean-Francois, was talking to someone during the trophy ceremony and they mentioned he was suspended for the 1st 12 games this year. Immediately I perked up on the couch and I'm pretty sure I gave my confused dog face to the TV, "rrruh??"-that means he missed the season, kids. He showed up for the SEC Championship game and the BCS title game...that's it. I know college football is a sham, but this is a bit much for even me. The kid can miss the whole season for academic/disciplinary reasons but it's okay to play in the really big games? Nice message to the rest of the kids. Anyone want to bet me that kid is in jail in the next 5 years? Now I have a reason to hate LSU, perfect. I'm not saying OSU coach Jim Tressel would've done anything different, hell, he had Maurice Clarett win him a national title, but this is still pretty sad, at least in my eyes.
Does anyone else think the Devil is looking at Roger Clemens' press conference yesterday and thinking, "Dude, that is fucked up!". I know there are many writers and radio-screamers out there giving all sorts of opinions on this latest episode. The articles on espn.com right now are pretty good, especially by Shaun Assel and Jemele Hill. I'm offended for Clemens former trainer, and good ol' Rog is being who we from New England knew he was all along-just a snake oil salesman only concerned with his own legacy and name. You stay classy Roger, and I can't wait to see you fumble and sweat like McGwire in front of Congress. Oh, and keep messing with the IRS and FBI, they love that. Ask Barry Bonds. They only spent 4 years tracking down Bonds, how long do you think they'd bat you around? I'm reminded of a long time ago when I went to a baseball card show at the Sheraton Tara in Nashua, NH-people were lined up out the front door to get your autograph, for a mere $35 (we're talking late 80's here people, think of how much that is to a 12/13 yr. old). I wouldn't wait in line for that. I've got 2 autographs in my life, Carlton Fisk (a complete jackass to an 11 yr. old me) and Jerry Rice (one of the nicest people I've ever met), and I'm keeping them forever. Kids don't forget, Rocket, and this one, along with numerous others from that time and place, never will forget what a schmuck you were, how you bailed on your obligations and how you were one of the first "it's all about me" guys we'd ever see on our teams.
Every kid gets to see one now, in every city with a team. You know what the real funny thing is when guys like Clemens leave? Your team wins-addition by subtraction. It's the same reason I'm thrilled the Yankees paid A-Rod for the next 10 years. Think he'd ever hit the other way to move a guy from 1st to 3rd? Me neither. Jeter? Kind of been his M.O. since day 1 in The Show.
So ESPN is also bringing up some old stuff and trying to pass it off as new....they are claming Jacksonville Jaguar Paul Spicer is giving the Patriots bulletin board material, with something he said in September. That's kind of sad, don't you think. The Patriots don't need bulletin board material from anyone. Besides, Bill Belichick already had that up in the locker room. ESPN is running along a very thin line of journalism, and this, in my estimation, is crossing over it. You report the news, you do not invent it, or become involved in it.
Did anyone catch the Celtics at the Lakers a few days ago? I didn't, but I saw pictures, and boy was it scary. The Lakers decided to pay tribute to some of their older teams by playing in the old uniforms, and the noteworthy thing was the early 80 short-shorts. I will never love Michael Jordan, but I am thrilled that he brought about the baggy short look. I can't even imagine wearing nut-huggers now, they'd feel like boxer briefs. I may not have a whole bunch of business to show, but I for damn sure don't need it out there in HD. Yikes!!! The worst part of this whole thing is that after the game Kobe Bryant stated that he "felt violated". Uh, Kobester, just a lil' friendly advice from a stocky, bald white guy with no vertical leap-take it if you'd like, leave it if you don't-maybe someone who has been accused of sodomy/rape, settled a lawsuit out of court, and bought his wife (that he definitely cheated on) an 8-carat diamond "apology" ring shouldn't be using phrases like "I felt violated". Just file that one away, for future reference.
As for the playoffs over the weekend (do you hear me yelling that, NCAA?), I thought the games were pretty good, but none really intrigued me, nor surprised me. Yes, I went 2-2 in my picks. I personally blame Chris Brown for me going 2-2, and Santana Moss for me not going 3-1. There, I said it. Kidding, kind of. My recaps:
Washington @ Seattle-the biggest thing that I noticed, and I'm wondering if I was the only one, was how freakin' long it took for the ball to get from Todd Collins' hand to his receivers! I felt like I was watching reruns of old Chiefs games with Steve DeBerg. John Grisham wrote novels on 10 yard out routes from the far hash. Everytime Collins threw to the far side of the field I kept waiting for the ball to be pick-6'ed. But this is not to lay all blame at the feet (er, arm) of Todd Collins of Walpole, MA. Nope. He had receivers who apparently forgot that they need to look the ball in, as I saw at least 5 drops, in the hands. And Santana Moss, you make me kind of nauseous. How could you not go after that ball? But don't you worry, he wasn't the only one all weekend to play it weak at the WR spot. Kudos to Seattle's D, they showed up large, harassed Collins all day, and held Clinton Portis in check, they earned the win.
Jacksonville @ Pittsburgh-I told anyone that would listen or read this that Jacksonville would win. I thought they'd win more convincingly, but thanks to some Gawd-Awful play calling on both sides, it was much closer than it should've been. Jacksonville was up 18 when they decided they were a reincarnation of the old Houston Oilers and got pass-happy. I beg of you to try that this weekend at New England, Asante Samuel would love another playoff TD. And I give credit when it's due, and in Pittsburgh's case, it was due until 2:56 to go in the game. The Steelers saw that they needed to quick pass to get back into the game, and they did that all the way into leading the game. Of course, going for 2 from 12 yards out isn't exactly a great idea, but that's why Omar Tomlin (or is it Mike Epps, I can't keep track of the coach/actor) gets paid the big bucks and I write a blog that 7 people read. But I digress. Pittsburgh had the ball on 3rd and 6, and the call was a QB sweep with Ben Roethlisberger. Uh, just a quick note here, this isn't the 2nd version of Tecmo Bowl when you could run "QB Sweep" with QB Eagles from the shotgun. MMkay? You have a QB that's played a damn fine 2nd half with quick passes, and that's the call from the booth? Did you hit your head, OC Bruce Arians? Did you mistake Big Ben for Slash?? If you had an 8 yard curl to Hines Ward, or Heath Miller, we're discussing your team in the next round. Instead, that play went nowhere, a punt, and then David Garrard kicked it into gear on 4th and 2 play, rumbling for 32 yards setting up the game winning FG. The only other thing that gets me creased about this game is reading how the Offensive Line for the Steelers didn't play well, giving up 6 sacks and no huge holes for the running game. Hold on just a second, here. Did anyone stating this watch the game? BR held onto the ball way too long on at least 3 of those sacks, and backup RB Najeh Davenport did his best pre-week 10 Laurence Maroney impression dancing in the hole. I thought Jacksonville played really well up front, but let's not annoint them with Holy Water just yet (a Parcells reference for you!).
NY Giants @ Tampa Bay-I blew this one, and knew it about halfway thru the 1st quarter. Tampa Bay had a great year, but they have no real speed on offense to stretch the opposing defense. Other than Joey Galloway, who was hurt early, there was nothing. I think their longest play of the game was a 14 yard completion to TE Alex Smith. Without any other threat, NYG could play zone, knowing that no play would go for 20 yards. So it's like playing in confined space. And nice job by the Giants O-Line, they dominated and gave Eli Manning plenty of time to pick apart the Tampa 2 defense. This was a really good job of play calling by Kevin Gilbride, he kept TB on their heels all day, and even went 3-wide on occasion. Eli looked great, and I honestly give the Giants quite a chance to go down to Dallas and beat the Cowboys and Jessica Simpson's boyfriend.
Tennessee @ San Diego-I was right about this one, but I'm not happy about it. Tennessee had this game all but wrapped up in the first half, and then Chris Brown did it again! Just outside the 10, on their way to at least a field goal, he decided to jump over no one. Lights Out/Juiced Up Shawn Merriman hit Brown and caused a fumble. So instead of it being potentially 10-0 and getting to watch Philip Rivers crap himself, I get to watch that clown gain momentum for the 2nd half. And he certainly did just that, Rivers came out like his hair was on fire in the 3rd quarter, throwing for 137 yards. And Tennessee managed to have some gaping holes in their secondary. I'm pretty sure that won't happen in Indy this weekend, but I've been known to be wrong before. Other than awful quarterbacking for most of this game, I will contend that the Titans had a shot, 2 plays killed them. That's how perfect they have to be. And please, Jeff Fisher, get Vince Young an average #1 WR. If Ocho Stinko wants to come to Nashville, pay Cincy the 2nd round pick. It will make a difference, and put a lil' crazy back into the locker room now that Pacman is gone.
The best part about the playoffs so far for me has been the commentary of Boomer Esiason. He's the only one taking anyone to task and refuses to kiss anyone's rear. That's not only to be respected, it's to be commended. He took Pittsburgh out to the woodshed by stating that they'd be sick with themselves the day after their game, and the more he talked, you could see Bill Cowher's chin protude out in front of the camera.
I assure you, tomorrow will not be about sports, it will be about what is going on in some parts of this crazy country....

The BCS...And what happened to New Years Day?
Alright, tonight is the big game, or supposed Big Game, in college football. I'm not buying it anymore...the BCS is sucking the life out of a great game. And some other time-honored traditions.
I didn't mind it when this BCS thing came about and then there was 1 game after January 1st. Honestly, it didn't bug me, and I liked that I got to watch it, and focus on that game. Now, if all the networks want to go back to that, no problem with me, and you'll have my blessing. But since my opinion doesn't matter squat, and I'm not the head of a major corporation that pours in millions of dollars to this fiasco, I get to voice my ideas over this beloved internet.
I'm not calling for a boycott of tonight's game. I'm hoping it's a good game, not a blowout like the Sugar Bowl, or the Cotton Bowl. Of course, I also flatly refuse to put a sponsors name in front of these things, especially after someone pointed out that there was a bowl game brought to us by a truck-stop...yep, that's a sign, and not a good one.
As for the game, there will be some interesting things to watch, and some really good players. First, please watch Glen Dorsey. He'll be completely healthy, something he hasn't been since October 20th, when the players and coaching staff at Auburn thought it would be okay to put a hit out on this fine ballplayer and chop-block him. Next, watch the MLB for Ohio State, James Laurinaitis. The simple fact that his old man formed one half of The Legion of Doom notwithstanding, he's an excellent LB, and leads the nation's statistically best Defense. There are other players to watch, and I know you will notice some names, like Robiskie...yes, his Dad is a coach in the NFL.
I'm going to gripe about the BCS more in a second, but for my prediction, and why, here goes: I'm picking Ohio State, 31-24. I don't trust LSU, and if I've learned one thing from every bowl season I can remember, take a look and see if any drama is around the program. Jim Tressel is as steady and as "boring" as you can get. He looks like a high school social studies teacher. Les Miles was back and forth about the Michigan Head Coaching job that he called a press conference a few hours before the SEC championship game. Add to that the fact that everytime I see an LSU game, he plays on the edge, going for it on 4-and-2, and has been burned. I think tonight is the night where he out-thinks himself and puts his team in horrible position with one of those decisions. He does enough things to make you shake your head. Tressel, all he needs to do for me is point out where Bulgaria is, and I'm fine. Now, if Glen Dorsey really is healthy, get a hold of this, because you are going to see a college lineman get triple-teamed....and to think, that's not even the name of a porn....damn!
So there's my prediction...now on to bash the BCS-I'm glad that Kansas beat VTech, and who was shocked that Georgia snot-bubbled Hawaii? Not me. Hawaii had a great year, but when it comes down to athletes and speed, there is no comparison between the WAC and the SEC. My bashing with the BCS and all these bowl games is that enough is enough. There are 32 bowl games, meaning 64 teams get to play an extra game...uh, there are only 119 Division 1-A or FCS (what the hell does that mean, anyway?) teams, so more than half get to play in a bowl game. Are you kidding me? Since when does half the class get to pass? Is college football graded on the curve? If you're a 6-6 team, suck it up and practice more for next year, not the "Holy crap are we average, thanks for the plane ticket to Detroit" Bowl. I'm tired...and I'm tired of watching. There are 5 (!) games this year after New Years Day. You clowns who have kids are infiltrating the good things in life, and I for one am tired of it. Want to see how I play connect the dots? Fine by me, here goes-
Years ago, some half-wit soccer Mom with Tubby Timmy didn't like that her chunk of a child didn't get a whole bunch of playing time-mostly because Tubby Timmy was tubby, didn't show up for practice, had bad allergies and really didn't help the morale of the team by letting the other team get past him for goals. Herm Edwards is right, "You play to win the game". So what did the Soccer Mom from Hell do? She thought it would be a great idea that all the kids get trophies for trying! Brilliant, now everyone wins. Want to see how this has played out in the last 20 years? Horribly. Now every male under the age of 18 is a freaking pansy. Great. Everyone needs to talk about their feelings, and if they even try to do the task they were set out to do, they should get an award. I've seen it in my friends kids, and it sickens me. "But I tried to take out the trash..."-Guess who? Tubby Timmy's sperm-fart, Tiny Tubby. Fan-freakin-tastic. Just what the world needs, another 'look at me, I'm adequate" nitwit with 3 therapists and a gluten allergy. UGH! I've got an announcement, the world is full of losers, no one remembers who got the silver medal in the Olympics except for their friends and family. Get over it. No one wins all the time, way it goes.
So, now everyone gets a trophy, and even a crappy 6-6 college football team gets a paid vacation for being adequate, or average. And here I was thinking the only job someone could do half right and still keep said job was the weather man, how wrong I was....
So now that I've exhaled, I need to thank the BCS for ruining a great American tradition, the one day a Man could actually sit on his ass and no woman in this great nation could bitch and moan about the trash, the Christmas lights, how his Uncle Marty farted silently on the leather couch (note-that's impossible), or writing thank you notes for the crappy two-sizes too small sweater they got from Great Aunt Margeret-New Years Day used to mean sitting on your ass, eating a lot of cheese, drinking beer, scratching, farting and channel surfing until you developed Carpal Tunnel. If the Rose Bowl was crap, you flipped it to the Cotton Bowl. Simple, and men were happy-do you get that? Happy!!! Now, I've noticed from some of my married brethren that their women don't like it when they are sleeping, or napping watching football. Well, BCS, thanks a bunch. You're already screwing with people's lives with Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and the obligatory Saturday regular season matchups, but now I can't even have my ONE day where the college football season would end? All for the almighty advertising dollar? Don't go giving me this whole "but everyone can see every game" garbage either. I'm tired of your rationale, especially when we all know it's bogus. Who else is looking forward to when PinkTaco.com endorses The Rose Bowl? Me, too.
You're the same morons who claim we can't possibly have a playoff, because that might impact the student-athletes--who are you crapping???? Have you taken a look at some of these future felons? And how could it work for Division 1-AA but not you? They play just as many games. As soon as those that run the BCS can figure out how to make money out of a playoff system, it will be done. Doesn't mean I like it, but that's where we're headed.
So BCS and all of you major conferences, can I pretty please, with sugar on top, have my New Years Day back?

Been too long...
Okay, so it's been awhile since I've typed up anything. I'm not one to really believe in New Years Resolutions, because I feel that we are who we are, that while we may change for a moment, but for the most part, what you see is what you get. My goal for this year is simply be a better person. That's been my resolution for the last 5 years +. Like everything else, some days are way better than others.
Sorry I haven't written anything about football in a couple of weeks, but I managed to be slightly unlucky and lose both of my leagues fantasy football finals. Kind of sucked. You get over it in a day. Especially in my case, just a bad week for my squads. Anyone that has ever played this stuff knows that they will always have a week or a season where their team just misfires. Well, week 16 was my week, and I knew it from the first kickoff. It was the week where my teams got yards but no endzone love. For those that won, good for you. Seriously. It's been a fun season, I'm glad a lot of things panned out. I wish the whole thing had panned out, it would've been cool to win a league. Oh well, on to next year and looking where Darren McFadden will land....
Now that the season is over, things to look forward to for next fantasy football season
-not drafting Romo. I know he had a great year, but have you looked at the last 5 games he's played this year and last? Calling it losing steam would be way too kind. I can't risk my sanity on him and a 35 year old Terrell Owens next year.
-looking for Steve Smith, again. All that guy needs is a competent QB to chuck him the ball. He's the man, and will be next year when everyone forgets about him.
-Already thinking of avoiding guys from Tampa Bay, Denver, and Seattle (if a coaching change is made), as you'll see below, you'll get why I'm planning on avoiding all Broncos, mostly because I hate Mike Shanahan. Shanahan the GM is killing Shanahan the Coach.
As for the playoffs, here's how I see this week going down:
Washington @ Seattle-well, I've stated I think Seattle is a fraud. Yes, they will have homefield advantage, so what? Has anyone seen them play? They have no running game to speak of. And if Mike Holmgren makes the huge error of playing Shaun Alexander over Maurice Morris, this makes my pick even easier. Washington is coming off of a shellacking of Dallas, has won 4 games in a row, and is playing for something none of us will ever understand. Joe Gibbs has done a ridiculous job of rallying this team after the murder of All-Pro safety Sean Taylor. Clinton Portis is running with a purpose. Santana Moss all of a sudden has healthy hamstrings. And Ol' Faithful QB Todd Collins is efficient, which is what you need in Al Saunders offense. I know some may see it as an upset, but I'm looking for Washington to paste Seattle, 31-14.
Jacksonville @ Pittsburgh-These 2 teams played in Week 15, and Jacksonville won 29-22. What's changed? Nothing, in my mind. Santonio Holmes may be healthier. And Willie Parker is done for the year with a broken leg. Najeh Davenport is an adequate backup, but Fast Willie would have been perfect vs this Jacksonville run defense. Willie may not hit well between the tackles, but is a great edge rusher. You won't get a whole lot of push up the middle, however I think you can beat the Jags on the outside. But Pittsburgh has lost 3 of its last 4, and isn't playing well. One of those losses was to this very Jacksonville team that's coming back to Pittsburgh. I didn't think the Steelers were that strong of a team, and I think Jacksonville will win this one, too, 24-13.
New York Giants @ Tampa Bay-I know Tampa Bay has done the same thing that Pittsburgh has done in the last 4 weeks, and that's lose 3 of those games. But they're different losses. Tampa Bay had their division wrapped up weeks ago, and their playoff seed was secure, so they rested their veterans. And as much as I'd love to heap on to the praises of the Giants for Saturday's performance against New England, they still lost the game. I don't see how Eli Manning is going to beat the Tampa 2 defense, so I'm going with Tampa Bay 17-10.
Tennessee @ San Diego-this one will depend on who is the QB for the Titans. If it's Vince Young, I'd give the former Oilers a shot. If it's Kerry Collins, I'm taking San Diego, 34-10.
Rumors that are floating around amongst other news
-Javon Walker may want to be traded...again? So he forced his way out of Green Bay, where Brett Favre made him a Pro Bowler. He's had 3 knee surgeries and is bitter at the guy who filled in for him, Brandon Marshall. He sounds like a cross between Ocho Stinko and T.O. Who's the GM that wants that on their team??
-Matt Lepsis is retiring. And to a guy who was a 3rd string TE at Colorado University to a Pro Bowl LT, I can only say happy trails. I have a ton of respect for someone who leaves a lot of money on the table when they can't perform up to their own level of expectation.
And now you know why I'm thinking of avoiding Broncos next year....
-Brian Billick canned. About damn time, his offense during his 9 year tenure averaged 23. Funny how Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Randall Cunningham, Robert Smith and Jake Reed can make someone look like a genius. Now, Mr. Billick, sit down and zip it. No one should hire you as a coach for awhile.
-The Bungles. It's time to blow this team up. And I just read that they have no GM....uh, how is that possible? Mike Brown needs to wake up and step aside and let a football guy run this team. They don't have a covered practice facility? It's Cincinnati, not Palm Springs. Trade Chad Johnson for 50 cents on the dollar, seriously. Cut Rudi Johnson and take the cap hit. Ocho Stinko is the new cancer, only worried about his stats and his dollars. No clue about the team concept. And Carson Palmer deserves better. He's a damn good QB. Leave the Housh alone, make him the #1 receiver, get rid of Chris Henry, too. Find Palmer a decent TE with hands, give the RB job to Kenny Watson and find some guy that can run a 7, 8, and 9 route to the opposite side of Housh. Offense is fixed. Whomever is coaching the D is fired. All of them. Keep the starting 4 from the Cleveland game in the defensive backfield. Those guys can play. Draft some LBs, find some fat guys up front, like a Grady Jackson, to plug in. The saddest thing in life, and sports, is wasted talent.
-The Browns, way to man up and admit you blew your playoff chances. That O-Line is coming along very nicely, and you've got a future ahead of you. If you can get a 2nd round pick for Derek Andersen, do it. He's not the answer. He's a QB that will do enough to get you to lose. He had some very suspect secondaries to pick on the last 3 weeks, and failed to deliver. Either that, or you get him a serious QB coach to fix his mechanics. I like his attitude, but his literal delivery is not so sweet.
-Oh, and the Patriots have the 7th pick in the draft. Can I just welcome Penn State ILB Dan Connor to the team now...please?
Everyone enjoy their respective hangovers!!!
