So, that's what I'm wondering. All this talk. "He's on 'roids!"
I beg to differ. If anything, he's on something you can't test for, and that's HGH. And I don't blame him one bit. I'd do the same thing. Barry Bonds did something to himself.
He's been called 'Roids, Pumpkinhead, Planetiod for a head, etc. He could be all those things, but I think it's way more simple than that. He did something to himself that I'd be willing to bet most of us would do, too, given the circumstances. He got jealous, filled himself with rage and envy. And I think it could happen to any one of us. It's just that our lives aren't on TV everyday, scrutinized by old white guys writing for newspapers and fat guys on sports radio. What would you do?
Barry Lamar Bonds was the man well before 1998 came around. He was a sure-fire 1st ballot Hall of Famer, great batting eye, a 3-time MVP and multiple Gold Gloves. So what the heck happened? How did a man at age 34 go on to break the HR single season record as a much older man? How is he on the verge of breaking Hank Aaron's career record? It's so simple, it's laughable.
But first, in order to understand the present, we must look back into the past. Think back to 1994. That stupid strike. Bud Selig got to play commissioner, and turned a blind eye to what all could see. He rode Cal Ripken's breaking of Lou Gehrig as the fans came back to the games. And then he allowed Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire to go on a HR binge. Bud, as the old saying goes, we reap what we sow.
How could one man, hell, how could we all be so blind?? Easy, we wanted to believe. We love baseball. But Bud Selig missed some people who might've done some stuff. Bret Boone hitting 47 dingers should have raised some eyebrows. Juan Gonzalez' physique, and of course, Jose Canseco. And we can't forget about Albert Belle and of course, Rafael Palmiero. Ah, Raffy. Bud Selig allowed this man, who waved his finger at Congress, to get his 3,000 hit and 500 HR a month after he tested positive for steriods. Hell of an example.
So now Barry. He's the root of all evil, according to some. Bull. It's not all him. As I stated before, he did what any one of us would do. And he did it out of blind rage and jealousy. These are emotions we've all had, when we were kids, in high school, and maybe in the last two years when someone at our office got a promotion we know they didn't earn. Barry Bonds did something no one else had done, and got his name on scoreboard, in Florida, in 1998. Guess what else was happening? Sosa and McGwire were busy making us enamored with the long ball. All he did was get to 500 HR's and 500 stolen bases. He's one of 3 people to ever hit 40-40 in a season, and Canseco was one of the other 2 (Alex Rodriguez being the 3rd). As far as baseball players go, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire couldn't carry Bonds' jock. And he knew it.
So, what would you do? If someone told you that you could rub some cream on your legs, take some "supplements" and maybe put some flaxseed oil under your tongue, and you'd be stronger, faster and recuperate from workouts in a quicker fashion, would you do it? I know I would. If all of this were happening to me, if I was the best at what I did, and all of a sudden two guys who weren't in the same class all of sudden got all of the publicity and glory, I'd do it.
And let's get this straight, Major League Baseball tests for steroids now. No one is that good to not get caught this long. He's on HGH, if anything (wink). Baseball won't test for that because the only accurate test is a blood test, and there is no way the union will allow that. So Selig gets his George Mitchell probe and hopes that Jason Giambi might say something.
Another interesting fact that no one seems to bring up is that there have been more pitchers busted for steroids than hitters. And how come no one has asked if Roger Clemens could've been on the stuff? Does that bat throwing incident with Mike Piazza ring a bell?
I just don't get why some people are looking at Bonds as the Ant-Christ. Is it a race thing? I doubt it. I guess I conclude this rambling with two things.....One, seriously, what would you do?
And two, Bud Selig, get your ass to San Francisco for Barry hitting 756, because I want to watch you reap what you sowed. You turned your blind eye to these guys becoming cartoon characters, and this is your just dessert. Anyone else find the irony that a used car salesman from Milwaukee got caught?---(that's what Bud used to do)
